Chapter 13: The Person Claire Trusted Most
I didn’t say anything after Michael’s words.
Someone Claire trusted more than anyone.
The sentence hung between us.
Vanessa looked at me.
She knew exactly what I was thinking.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than if he had.
“Michael.””
His voice was low.
“Daniel, you need to understand something.””
“I don’t need another warning. I need a name.””
A long pause.
Then:
“Me.””
My stomach dropped.
The old house suddenly felt smaller.
I stared at the phone.
“What did you say?””
Michael exhaled.
“I’m the person Claire trusted most.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You knew,” I said.
Vanessa looked away.
“You knew it was him.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“No more half-truths.””
Nia stood quietly beside me.
Watching.
Learning.
Seeing every adult around her fail to give a straight answer.
I hated that.
Michael spoke through the phone.
“I didn’t forge your signature.””
“Then why are you saying Claire trusted you?””
“Because she did.””
“Explain.””
“I had access to everything because she asked me to help.””
I clenched my jaw.
“Then how did someone use my documents?””
“Because I made a mistake.””
The honesty surprised me.
“What mistake?””
Michael’s voice cracked slightly.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
I closed my eyes.
“Who?””
“I don’t know yet.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying they don’t know.””
“Daniel, listen to me. I found something in Claire’s files.””
“What?””
“She created a list.””
“A list of what?””
“People who had access to Nia’s information.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who was on it?””
Michael hesitated.
“Everyone.””
“Everyone?””
“Yes.””
“Read it.””
Silence.
Then he said:
“You.””
My heart stopped.
“Me?””
“Claire listed you because you were Nia’s father and had complete access.””
“Obviously.””
“Vanessa.””
I looked at her.
“Michael?””
“My mother.””
I froze.
“Your mother?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Me.””
The room became silent.
Michael continued.
“Claire didn’t make the list because she suspected everyone.””
“Then why?””
“Because she believed the person responsible would be someone who could move between all of us unnoticed.””
I looked at the papers in my hand.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Someone invisible.
Then Nia spoke.
“Dad.””
I turned.
She was staring at the photograph.
“What?””
She pointed.
“Look.””
I walked closer.
The picture showed Claire, Vanessa, and Nia.
But behind them was someone else.
A person standing near the doorway.
I picked up the photo.
My breath caught.
Because I recognized the jacket.
The watch.
The person.
“Who is that?”” Nia asked.
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew.
My old family lawyer.
The man who handled everything after Claire died.
The man who helped me with paperwork.
The man I trusted completely.
“Michael.””
“Yes?””
“Was Robert involved?””
The silence on the phone told me everything.
“Michael.””
“I didn’t want to believe it.””
My hands shook.
“Robert?””
“I found transfers.””
“To where?””
“An account connected to him.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
For the first time, I believed her.
Not completely.
But enough.
Because her expression wasn’t fear.
It was shock.
“Then why did Claire hide the evidence?””
Michael answered.
“Because Robert was dangerous.””
“How?””
“Because he wasn’t just managing the accounts.””
A pause.
“He was managing people.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Michael lowered his voice.
“Daniel, Claire discovered Robert had been manipulating your family for years.””
I looked at the old house.
The memories.
The trust.
The people I believed were protecting us.
“What did Claire find?””
Michael answered:
“She found documents showing Robert had been trying to gain control over Nia’s inheritance since she was a toddler.””
My chest tightened.
“But why?””
Another pause.
“Because if anything happened to you, he wanted legal control over everything.””
I looked at Nia.
Everything.
My daughter’s future.
Her mother’s final gift.
Her entire life.
All planned by someone who was supposed to help us.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“The music box.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Claire didn’t just hide evidence there.””
She stepped closer.
“She hid a message for Robert.””
I frowned.
“How do you know?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because I saw it.””
“When?””
“The day Claire died.””
The room went silent.
“What did it say?””
Vanessa looked at Nia.
Then me.
“She wrote one sentence.””
My heart pounded.
“What sentence?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Don’t trust the person who says they’re protecting you.””
And at that moment, we all realized the same thing.
May you like
Claire wasn’t warning us about the thief.
She was warning us about the protector.
