Chapter 12: Claire’s Final Request
The world seemed to stop.
Protect Nia from you.
Those words shouldn’t have made sense.
But somehow, they hurt more because part of me wondered if there was a truth I didn’t know.
“Vanessa, what are you talking about?””
She sounded calmer than she had in days.
Almost like she had been waiting for this moment.
“I knew you would find the papers eventually.””
“You knew because you were involved.””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“No, Daniel. I was involved because Claire asked me to be.””
I closed my eyes.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to listen.””
I almost ended the call.
But then she said:
“Ask yourself why Claire trusted me with the one thing she couldn’t tell you.””
I looked at Nia.
She was watching me carefully.
“Where are you?””
“Does it matter?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Come to the old house.””
The old house.
The house where Claire and I lived before she got sick.
I hadn’t been there in years.
“I’m not coming alone.””
“I know.””
She hung up.
I didn’t tell Nia everything.
I told her I needed to check something.
But she insisted on coming.
And I couldn’t blame her.
She was tired of being left outside the truth.
When we arrived, Vanessa was waiting on the porch.
She looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Just tired.
She held the wooden music box.
“You brought it.””
She nodded.
“I should have given this back sooner.””
I stared.
“Why didn’t you?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of what it would prove.””
I walked closer.
“Open it.””
She looked at Nia.
Then slowly opened the music box.
Inside was a hidden compartment.
A small stack of papers.
And a photograph.
Nia gasped.
Because the photo showed Claire.
Vanessa.
And Nia.
Together.
Before everything changed.
My confusion grew.
“You knew Claire before?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She hired me.””
I stared at her.
“For what?””
“To help her.””
“With what?””
Vanessa looked at Nia.
Then back at me.
“Finding out the truth.””
The words felt impossible.
“You’re telling me Claire knew you before you married me?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“Because Claire asked me not to.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So everyone knew things except me?””
Vanessa looked away.
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
My voice broke.
“My daughter thought she was unwanted.””
Vanessa flinched.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
“I do.””
She looked at Nia.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen from her.
Regret.
“I failed her.””
Nia didn’t respond.
Vanessa continued.
“Claire contacted me because she suspected someone was accessing Nia’s accounts.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked down.
“She didn’t know at first.””
“Then who did she suspect?””
Vanessa took out a document.
“This.””
I grabbed it.
It was a report.
A private investigation.
The name at the top shocked me.
My father.
I looked up.
“My father?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Claire discovered financial activity connected to him.””
I felt dizzy.
“My father died years ago.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Vanessa pointed to another name.
A company.
A person.
Someone managing accounts.
I read it.
And my blood turned cold.
Because it was someone I knew.
Someone who had been helping my family for years.
Someone Michael never mentioned.
My mother’s attorney.
Vanessa whispered:
“Claire discovered your family’s lawyer had been moving money.””
I looked at the papers.
Everything connected.
The trust account.
The forged documents.
The missing jewelry.
But one question remained.
“Why did you sell the necklace?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because I was trying to find what Claire hid.””
My anger returned.
“You stole from my daughter.””
“I know.””
“You hurt her.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was desperate.””
She looked at Nia.
“And because I made the biggest mistake of my life.””
Nia finally spoke.
“Did you ever care about me?””
Vanessa froze.
The question hit harder than any accusation.
After a long silence, Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
Nia looked away.
“Then why did you treat me like I didn’t matter?””
Vanessa had no answer.
Only tears.
Then my phone rang.
Michael.
I answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Daniel, where are you?””
“Why?””
“Because I found something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“The person who forged your signature wasn’t your mother’s attorney.””
My heart stopped.
“Who was it?””
Michael’s voice dropped.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
“It was someone who had access to every document in your house.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at Nia.
Michael finished:
May you like
“Someone Claire trusted more than anyone.””
And suddenly, I realized the truth was much closer than any of us expected.
