Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Claire’s Secret
The café near the hospital hadn’t changed.
The same cracked wooden tables.
The same old coffee machine making strange noises.
The same window where Claire and I used to sit after difficult appointments.
Only this time, she wasn’t beside me.
I sat across from a woman I had never met.
Rebecca looked nervous.
She kept glancing outside.
“You came alone?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked relieved.
“Good.””
I leaned forward.
“Start from the beginning.””
Rebecca wrapped her hands around her coffee cup.
“I was Claire’s nurse.””
I nodded.
“I remember your name.””
Her eyes softened.
“She talked about you often.””
My throat tightened.
“She loved you, Daniel.””
I looked down.
“Then why did she think someone would betray her?””
Rebecca was quiet.
Finally, she opened her purse.
And placed a small envelope on the table.
“This is why.””
I didn’t touch it.
“What is it?””
“A copy of documents Claire asked me to keep.””
“What documents?””
“Financial records.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“About what?””
“About money that disappeared.””
I stared at her.
“Whose money?””
“Nia’s.””
My chest tightened.
“Explain.””
Rebecca looked at the envelope.
“After Claire was diagnosed, she created an account for Nia. A trust fund.””
I knew about it.
Claire had mentioned wanting to save money for college.
“How much?””
“Enough to help her when she turned eighteen.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside were printed bank statements.
My eyes moved across the numbers.
Then stopped.
A large withdrawal.
A few months after Claire died.
“What is this?””
Rebecca swallowed.
“Someone accessed the account.””
My hands went cold.
“Vanessa?””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
“How?””
“She was listed as a temporary guardian.””
I closed my eyes.
I remembered.
After Claire died, Vanessa helped with paperwork.
She said she wanted to make things easier.
I trusted her.
Rebecca continued.
“Claire noticed something before she passed.””
“What?””
“She saw withdrawals.””
“How much?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Almost everything.””
I stared at the documents.
The room spun.
“She stole from my daughter.””
Rebecca looked away.
“Claire wasn’t sure.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted to believe Vanessa had an explanation.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course she did.””
Because that was Claire.
She always searched for the good in people.
Even when they didn’t deserve it.
Rebecca reached into her purse again.
“She left this too.””
Another envelope.
This one had my name.
Daniel.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a letter from Claire.
My beloved Daniel,
If you are reading this, then something happened that made you question the people around Nia.
Please don’t blame yourself.
You always wanted to see the best in people.
That was one of the reasons I loved you.
But remember this:
Kindness does not mean ignoring warning signs.
I stopped reading.
My vision blurred.
Rebecca looked away respectfully.
I continued.
I need you to protect Nia.
Not just her belongings.
Not just her money.
Her confidence.
Never let anyone convince her she is less important.
I folded the letter.
My hands were shaking.
“She knew.””
Rebecca nodded.
“She knew Vanessa might hurt Nia.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she was afraid you would confront Vanessa before she had proof.””
I looked at her.
“And the music box?””
Rebecca sighed.
“Claire hid copies of everything inside.””
I stared.
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
“Bank records?””
“Yes.””
“Messages?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t Vanessa find them?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because Claire trusted Nia.””
I understood.
The music box wasn’t valuable because of what was inside.
It was valuable because Vanessa didn’t understand the one thing Claire knew.
Nia remembered everything.
On the way home, I called the bank.
I needed confirmation.
I needed facts.
Not emotions.
Not guesses.
The bank representative searched the records.
Then her voice changed.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“There’s something you should know.””
“What?””
“The withdrawals weren’t the only unusual activity.””
My grip tightened around the steering wheel.
“What else?””
“There was a second account.””
“What account?””
“A hidden account connected to your wife’s trust.””
My heart raced.
“Who opened it?””
The woman paused.
Then answered:
“Your wife.””
I pulled the car over.
“What?””
“She created it before she died.””
I stared at the road ahead.
“Why?””
The woman continued.
“Because she believed someone might try to take Nia’s inheritance.””
I felt a chill.
“Is there money in it?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
The answer made my breath stop.
“Enough to prove Claire knew something was coming.””
I looked at my phone.
A new message appeared.
From Vanessa.
