Chapter 11: The Paperwork That Changed Everything

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was terrified.

The word Michael used kept repeating in my head.

They started with Nia.

Not money.

Not jewelry.

My daughter.

The next morning, I went straight to the storage room where I kept important documents.

Birth certificates.

Insurance papers.

Medical records.

Everything.

Nia followed behind me.

“Dad?””

I looked at her.

“You can stay upstairs if you want.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was steady.

“I want to know.””

I nodded.

Because she deserved the truth.

I opened the old filing cabinet.

The folder was there.

Nia Carter.

I pulled everything out.

Birth certificate.

Hospital records.

Adoption paperwork.

Wait.

Adoption paperwork.

I froze.

Nia noticed.

“What?””

I stared at the documents.

“Nothing.””

But it wasn’t nothing.

Because Nia was not adopted.

At least, not that I knew.

Claire and I had always talked about having children naturally.

And then Nia was born.

The paperwork was confusing.

There were forms I didn’t remember seeing.

Signatures.

Dates.

A legal document attached to the back.

I read the first line.

“Temporary guardianship transfer.””

My heart dropped.

“This isn’t possible.””

Nia looked worried.

“What?””

I scanned the pages.

Someone had filed a temporary guardianship document when Nia was three years old.

Three years old.

Long before Claire died.

Long before Vanessa entered our lives.

I looked at the signature.

My signature.

Again.

Forged.

I felt sick.

“Dad?””

I sat down.

Someone had been trying to gain control of Nia before I ever knew there was a problem.

I called Michael.

He answered immediately.

“Did you find it?””

“Yes.””

My voice was cold.

“Explain.””

A long silence.

Then:

“Claire found it after reviewing old records.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she thought you might be involved.””

The words cut deep.

“Excuse me?””

“She didn’t think you did it.””

“Then what?””

“She thought someone used your information.””

I looked at Nia.

Someone had used my name.

My trust.

My family.

“Who filed it?””

Michael hesitated.

“Daniel.””

“Who?””

“Your mother.””

I froze.

The room went silent.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t speak.

My mother had passed away two years before Claire.

She had loved Nia.

She was the grandmother who bought her books and baked cookies every Sunday.

“No.””

Michael sighed.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

I looked at the documents again.

“But Claire found proof.””

“What proof?””

“A letter.””

“Where?””

“In the music box.””

I closed my eyes.

The music box.

Everything kept coming back to it.

“Vanessa took it.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“Because she knew what was inside.””

My stomach turned.

“Michael.””

“Yes?””

“Why does Vanessa know so much?””

Another pause.

Then he said:

“Because she was involved before you married her.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

I ended the call.

Nia was watching me.

Her face had gone pale.

“Dad?””

I forced myself to stay calm.

“Your grandmother loved you.””

“Then why are you looking at those papers like something is wrong?””

I didn’t want to tell her.

Not yet.

But she deserved honesty.

“There are things I don’t understand.””

She looked at the papers.

“Are they about me?””

I nodded.

Her eyes filled.

“Why does everyone have secrets about me?””

That sentence broke me.

I pulled her close.

“I’m sorry.””

She cried quietly.

After she calmed down, I looked through the documents again.

Something was missing.

A page.

The original authorization page.

The one with the details.

I searched the folder.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something.

A torn edge.

Someone had removed it.

I stood up.

“Dad?””

“I need to make a call.””

“Who?””

I looked at the name on my phone.

Vanessa.

She answered after one ring.

“I wondered when you would find out.””

My entire body went cold.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“About the guardianship papers?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She laughed softly.

“Because Claire told me.””

I froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Her voice became quiet.

“It’s the one thing you never understood about Claire.””

“What?””

“She didn’t hate me.””

I said nothing.

“She needed me.””

My heart pounded.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa’s next words changed everything.

“Daniel, before Claire died, she asked me to do something.””

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“She asked me to protect Nia from you.””
