Chapter 14: The Man Behind the Papers
I drove straight to Robert’s office.
I didn’t call first.
I didn’t make an appointment.
For years, I had walked into that office believing I was entering a place of safety.
Now it felt like walking into enemy territory.
Robert was exactly where I expected him to be.
Behind a large wooden desk.
Wearing the same expensive suit.
The same calm expression.
The same smile he had worn at Claire’s funeral.
“Daniel.””
He stood up.
“It’s been a while.””
I didn’t sit.
“We need to talk.””
His smile faded slightly.
“About what?””
I placed the documents on his desk.
His eyes moved down.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Recognition.
“You know what these are.””
Robert leaned back.
“Careful.””
That word again.
Everyone who had something to hide seemed to use it.
“Did you access Nia’s trust account?””
“No.””
“Did you forge my signature?””
“No.””
“Did you help Vanessa?””
His expression changed.
Barely.
But enough.
“Why would you ask that?””
“Because Claire found out.””
That was the first time his face truly changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Then it disappeared.
“She was very sick at the end.””
I stared at him.
“Don’t.””
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t use her illness to explain away what you did.””
Robert sighed.
“Daniel, grief makes people search for someone to blame.””
I leaned forward.
“I’m not grieving anymore.””
His eyes narrowed.
“I know exactly what happened.””
He smiled.
“No.””
He stood.
“You know pieces.””
“Then give me the rest.””
Robert walked around his desk.
“Do you really want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Even if it changes how you see Claire?””
My anger flared.
“Don’t talk about her.””
He stopped.
“Claire was brilliant.””
I said nothing.
“But she was also suspicious.””
“Because she had reason.””
“Maybe.””
He looked at the documents.
“She trusted the wrong people.””
“Like you?””
He smiled slightly.
“Like Vanessa.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She wasn’t supposed to marry you.””
The room went quiet.
“What did you say?””
Robert looked almost amused.
“Ask her why she became close to your family so quickly.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Are you saying Vanessa married me for money?””
“I’m saying Vanessa was desperate.””
I thought about the jewelry.
The money.
The lies.
“But you knew.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Robert walked back to his desk.
“Because I introduced her.””
The words hit me.
“You what?””
“I needed someone close.””
My blood ran cold.
“Close to who?””
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
“Nia.””
Robert smiled.
“Children are easier to influence than adults.””
I wanted to hit him.
But I controlled myself.
“You’re admitting this?””
“No.””
He leaned closer.
“I’m explaining how the world works.””
“You manipulated my family.””
“I managed risk.””
“You stole from my daughter.””
“I protected assets.””
I stared at him.
Then I understood.
Robert didn’t see Nia as a child.
He saw her as a number.
An inheritance.
A problem to control.
“What did Claire find?””
His expression hardened.
“She found things she shouldn’t have.””
“What things?””
He walked to the window.
“Daniel, your wife was dying.””
“She was protecting our daughter.””
“She was destroying everything I built.””
I felt a chill.
“You were afraid of her.””
Robert turned.
“No.””
A pause.
“I respected her.””
That scared me more.
Because villains rarely feared good people.
They respected them.
“You thought you could hide everything forever?””
Robert smiled.
“No.””
Then he reached into his drawer.
My heart stopped.
He pulled out a folder.
“I was actually waiting for you to find this.””
He placed it on the desk.
“What is it?””
“Something Claire never saw.””
I didn’t touch it.
“Why show me?””
Robert looked toward the door.
“Because the truth is about to hurt everyone.””
I opened the folder.
Inside was one document.
One page.
One signature.
Claire’s signature.
My blood went cold.
Because underneath her signature were words I never expected to see.
A legal agreement.
Between Claire and Robert.
And the title at the top read:
*Guardianship Transfer Agreement.*
But the date was three months before Claire died.
May you like
And the person named as Nia’s future guardian was not me.
It was Robert.
