Chapter 10: The Voice on the Flash Drive

The name on the screen made my hands go numb.

I stared at it.

Then I looked at Nia.

Neither of us spoke.

Because the person who recorded the video was someone I had trusted for years.

Someone who had stood beside me after Claire died.

Someone who had promised to help protect my daughter.

My brother.

Michael.

Nia noticed my expression.

“Dad?””

I quickly closed the laptop.

“Wait.””

“Who is it?””

I looked at the flash drive.

“I need to watch this first.””

She nodded, but I could see the fear in her eyes.

Not because she knew Michael.

Because she had learned something terrifying.

Adults could hide things.

Even people who claimed to love her.

I plugged the flash drive back in.

The video opened.

Michael appeared on the screen.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Like someone carrying a secret for too long.

“Daniel,” he said.

My chest tightened.

“If you’re watching this, then Claire’s plan worked.””

I froze.

Claire’s plan.

Michael continued.

“I need you to understand something before you judge me.””

I almost laughed.

Because that was exactly what guilty people said.

“I made mistakes.””

The video paused briefly.

Then continued.

“After Claire became sick, she asked me to help her investigate something.””

I leaned closer.

“What?””

Michael looked directly into the camera.

“She believed someone was using Nia’s trust account.””

My jaw tightened.

“She asked me to check the records.””

I remembered that time.

Michael had told me he was helping Claire organize paperwork.

I thought it was just kindness.

But there was more.

“I found evidence.””

The video showed copies of documents.

Bank transfers.

Names.

Dates.

My eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

Because one name appeared repeatedly.

Vanessa.

I felt anger rise.

But Michael wasn’t finished.

“The problem was, Claire didn’t want to confront Vanessa immediately.””

“Why?”” I whispered.

The video answered.

“Because Claire believed Vanessa wasn’t acting alone.””

The room became silent.

Nia grabbed my hand.

“Not alone?””

I shook my head.

Michael continued.

“She thought someone else was guiding Vanessa.””

The screen flickered.

Then another document appeared.

A signature.

I leaned forward.

And my blood turned cold.

Because it wasn’t a stranger.

It was mine.

My signature.

But I had never signed that document.

“What is that?”” Nia whispered.

I couldn’t answer.

The document showed permission for financial access.

A guardian authorization form.

My name.

My signature.

My approval.

But I knew I never signed it.

Michael’s voice continued.

“Daniel, if you’re seeing this, then someone forged your signature.””

I stopped breathing.

Someone had used my identity.

Someone had access.

Someone close enough to get my personal information.

Michael looked directly into the camera.

“I should have told you sooner.””

The guilt in his voice was obvious.

“But Claire asked me not to.””

I felt anger.

“Why?””

“Because she was afraid if Vanessa knew we were investigating, she would destroy the evidence.””

The video paused.

Then Michael said:

“And because she didn’t know who else she could trust.””

The words hurt.

Because Claire had trusted Michael.

But she hadn’t trusted me enough to tell me.

I watched until the end.

Michael’s final words were the ones I couldn’t forget.

“Daniel, the person who helped Vanessa access Nia’s accounts is someone who has been in your home.””

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Nia looked at me.

“Dad.””

I swallowed.

“Yeah?””

“Who was it?””

I didn’t know.

But suddenly, every memory felt different.

Every conversation.

Every person who had entered our home.

Then my phone rang.

Michael.

I stared at the name.

After everything I had just learned, I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Hello?””

His voice came immediately.

“Daniel.””

“What did you do?””

Silence.

Then:

“You watched it.””

“Yes.””

“I was hoping you wouldn’t have to.””

My anger exploded.

“You knew all this?””

“I knew part of it.””

“You let me believe Vanessa was just careless?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Protect me?””

I stood up.

“My daughter was living with someone who stole from her!””

Michael’s voice became quiet.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

“Please.””

I stopped.

Because I had never heard him sound afraid.

“The person who helped Vanessa wasn’t just someone in your home.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you saying?””

Michael hesitated.

Then whispered:

“They had access before Vanessa ever married you.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

The line went silent.

Then Michael said:

“Daniel, you need to look at the original adoption paperwork for Nia.””

I froze.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

His answer destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“Because the person who forged your signature didn’t start with the money.””

May you like

A pause.

“They started with Nia.””
