Chapter 15: The Choice Claire Made

I stared at the document.

My eyes refused to accept what they were seeing.

Claire’s signature.

A guardianship agreement.

Robert’s name.

My wife had signed a document giving him authority over Nia.

Three months before she died.

I looked up.

“No.””

Robert watched me carefully.

“You wanted the truth.””

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“This isn’t real.””

He shrugged.

“You can verify it.””

I grabbed the paper.

“Why?””

“Because Claire believed you were not prepared.””

The sentence felt like a knife.

“Prepared for what?””

Robert didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

He walked back to his desk.

“She knew someone was going after Nia.””

“I know.””

“No.””

His eyes met mine.

“She knew someone inside the family was dangerous.””

I froze.

“And she chose me.””

I shook my head.

“She would never.””

Robert smiled sadly.

“You didn’t know everything about your wife.””

The worst part was that he sounded convincing.

Because Claire had kept secrets.

Not because she didn’t love me.

Because she was protecting Nia.

But this?

This felt impossible.

I left the office without another word.

When I got back to the house, Vanessa was waiting.

Nia was upstairs.

The moment she saw my face, she knew something happened.

“What did he show you?””

I held up the document.

Her expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Robert.””

She closed her eyes.

“Oh no.””

“You knew.””

“No.””

“Then why are you scared?””

She looked toward the stairs.

“Because I know what this means.””

I stepped closer.

“Explain.””

Vanessa sat down.

For the first time, she looked defeated.

“Claire didn’t trust Robert.””

“Then why sign this?””

“Because it wasn’t what it looked like.””

I stared.

“Everyone says that.””

“I’m serious.””

She pointed to the document.

“Look at the date.””

I did.

“Three months before she died.””

“Yes.””

“What am I missing?””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“Claire signed many documents near the end.””

“So?””

“So some were real.””

She paused.

“And some were traps.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She knew Robert was watching.””

My anger softened slightly.

“What are you saying?””

“Claire wanted Robert to believe he had won.””

I stared at her.

“She tricked him?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She created a fake trail.””

“Why?””

“To see who would react.””

I looked at the paper again.

The signature.

The agreement.

The trap.

“Then why did Robert have this?””

“Because he took it.””

“When?””

“After Claire died.””

I felt sick.

“So he’s been using a fake document?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted you to doubt yourself.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Toward Nia.

A child who had spent years wondering why adults kept secrets.

Then I realized something.

Robert didn’t just want money.

He wanted control.

And confusion was his weapon.

I called Michael.

He answered quickly.

“Did you find Robert?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel, listen carefully.””

“What?””

“I checked the original guardianship documents.””

“And?””

“They’re fake.””

I closed my eyes.

“I knew it.””

“But there’s something else.””

“What?””

Michael’s voice became serious.

“The real document exists.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

“Claire hid it.””

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“With the person she trusted most.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked back at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Because we both knew.

The person Claire trusted most wasn’t Robert.

It wasn’t Michael.

It wasn’t me.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been there from the beginning.

Someone who had protected Nia quietly.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“Your daughter knows where it is.””

I turned toward the stairs.

“Nia?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Claire told her.””

My heart stopped.

“What did she tell her?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“She told Nia that if anyone ever tried to take her away…”

She paused.

“…she should find the woman who promised to protect her.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who?””

May you like

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“The woman who was there the night Claire died.””
