Chapter 9: The Name Buried in the Past

Nobody spoke after Claire said those words.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

The sentence hung in the room.

Impossible.

Terrifying.

And somehow, Claire believed it.

I watched her carefully.

For the first time since I came home, she didn’t look like someone controlling the situation.

She looked like someone who had just seen a ghost.

“Who?”” I asked.

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You just said you recognized the voice.””

“I recognized it.””

She swallowed.

“But I don’t know how.””

Victor stood.

“Start explaining.””

Claire looked at him.

“I don’t have to explain anything to you.””

Victor’s expression didn’t change.

“You might want to.””

He pointed toward the door.

“Because whoever called knows your family’s private information, has access to your cameras, and knows Michael came home tonight.””

I looked at Claire.

“How would someone know that?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“How?””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“Because maybe I’m not the only person who has been hiding things.””

The accusation caught me off guard.

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked at Emma.

Then back at me.

“Ask your daughter’s mother.””

My heart stopped.

“Don’t.””

But she continued.

“Ask what really happened before she died.””

The room went silent.

Emma looked confused.

“Dad?””

I turned away.

“Not now.””

But the damage was already done.

The words were out.

And Claire knew exactly where to strike.

“You never told her the whole story, did you?””

I looked at her.

“You don’t get to talk about her.””

Claire laughed softly.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The hero.””

She shook her head.

“You think you’re protecting everyone.””

I felt anger burning.

“Enough.””

Victor stepped between us.

“Both of you need to stop.””

He looked at me.

“Michael, whoever this person is, they are using your past against you.””

I knew he was right.

But there was one thing I couldn’t understand.

Why bring up Emma’s mother?

Why now?

After Emma went upstairs with Victor watching the front door, I searched through old files.

Photos.

Medical records.

Documents from years ago.

My late wife, Sarah.

The woman who had changed my entire life.

I found the folder I hadn’t opened in years.

Inside was a letter.

One I had forgotten.

It was from Sarah’s attorney.

I opened it.

The first line made my hands shake.

“Regarding the concerns raised before Sarah’s passing…”

I read faster.

Sarah had been worried.

Not about me.

About someone else.

Someone trying to access Emma’s inheritance.

Someone who believed they deserved control.

Then I saw the name.

A name I had never expected.

I whispered it.

“No…”

Victor looked over.

“What?””

I handed him the letter.

He read it.

His expression changed.

“Michael…”

I looked at him.

“Tell me.””

He slowly lowered the paper.

“This person.””

He pointed at the name.

“They’re connected to everything.””

I stared at the signature.

A name from my past.

A person Sarah had tried to protect Emma from.

A person who had disappeared after Sarah died.

A person everyone believed was gone forever.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

No number.

Just a photo.

I opened it.

It was taken inside my house.

Seconds ago.

Emma was asleep in her room.

Someone was standing beside her bed.

My blood turned cold.

Because the person in the photo was wearing the same jacket as the man from the SUV.

And underneath the picture were five words:

“Your daughter remembers me.””
