Chapter 12: The House of Forgotten Memories
The location arrived twenty minutes later.
No address.
Just coordinates.
Victor entered them into his phone.
The result appeared.
An abandoned property outside the city.
A place I recognized.
My breath caught.
“No.””
Claire looked over.
“What?””
I stared at the screen.
“I’ve been there.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
Before Emma was born.
Before Sarah died.
The memory came back slowly.
A small house.
A quiet road.
Sarah crying in the passenger seat.
I had asked her what was wrong.
She told me:
“Some things are better left buried.””
At the time, I thought it was stress.
I thought grief was changing her.
I never imagined she was afraid.
Victor grabbed his keys.
“We need to go.””
Claire stood.
“I’m coming.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
“I know where it is.””
“So do we.””
“You don’t know what’s inside.””
Neither of us spoke.
Because she was right.
I hated that she was right.
The drive took forty minutes.
No one talked.
Finally, Claire broke the silence.
“There’s something you should know.””
I looked out the window.
“I’m listening.””
“When I married you…”
She paused.
“I wasn’t completely honest.””
I laughed quietly.
“Understatement.””
She accepted that.
“I knew about Emma’s trust.””
My jaw tightened.
“How?””
“Richard told me.””
“Your father.””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me.””
Her silence answered.
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“At first?””
She swallowed.
“Because I thought I could help my family.””
“And later?””
She looked down.
“Later I realized I loved you.””
I almost responded.
But I stopped.
Because love didn’t erase what she did.
Not the way she hurt Emma.
Not the way she betrayed my trust.
The car stopped.
We arrived.
The old house looked exactly as I remembered.
Broken windows.
Overgrown grass.
A place frozen in time.
Victor checked the area.
“Someone was here recently.””
I walked toward the front door.
It opened before I touched it.
Inside was dark.
Cold.
“Emma?””
My voice echoed.
No answer.
Then a sound.
A small movement upstairs.
I ran.
“Emma!””
I reached the second floor.
A room at the end of the hallway was open.
Inside, Emma sat on the floor.
She looked at me.
“Dad.””
I rushed to her.
“Are you hurt?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I hugged her.
Then I looked around.
Andrew was gone.
But there was something on the table.
A box.
Old.
Wooden.
With Sarah’s handwriting on it.
My hands froze.
I knew that handwriting.
I opened the box slowly.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
Documents.
And one envelope with my name.
I opened it.
The first sentence made my heart stop.
“Michael, if you are reading this, it means Andrew found Emma.””
I couldn’t breathe.
Sarah had known.
She had predicted this day.
I kept reading.
“Do not trust anyone who tells you they are protecting her.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
The letter continued.
“Not Claire. Not Daniel. Not even the people who claim to love you.””
My hands shook.
There was more.
One final sentence.
The sentence that changed everything.
“Because the person who caused my death is still close to Emma.””
I looked up.
The room was silent.
Then Emma pointed behind me.
“Dad…”
I turned.
A figure stood in the doorway.
Someone who had followed us.
Someone who had been hiding the truth for years.
May you like
And when the person stepped into the light, I realized Sarah’s warning had never been about Andrew.
It had been about someone else.
