Chapter 3: The Secret Agreement

I didn’t sleep.

Not that night.

Not the next morning.

The photo stayed on my phone like a wound I couldn’t stop touching.

Claire sitting at a table.

A lawyer beside her.

And across from them…

My older brother Daniel.

The same brother who had hugged Emma at Christmas.

The same brother who told me, “She’s lucky to have you as a father.””

I stared at the picture.

“What did you do, Daniel?””

Claire tried to explain.

Of course she did.

People always explain when they know they’ve been caught.

“You’re misunderstanding everything.””

I stood in the kitchen while Emma sat quietly at the table.

“Then explain.””

Claire poured herself water.

Her hands were steady.

Too steady.

“Daniel was helping us.””

“With what?””

She looked at Emma.

“With your situation.””

My jaw tightened.

“My situation?””

“Yes.””

She lowered her voice.

“You’re never home.””

Emma looked up.

I saw the hurt in her eyes.

Claire continued.

“I was worried about what would happen if something happened to you.””

“So you planned to take my daughter away?””

“No.””

She said it quickly.

Too quickly.

“I was making arrangements.””

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Arrangements?””

Claire sat down.

“Temporary guardianship.””

The words felt unreal.

“You wanted legal control over Emma?””

“I wanted security.””

“You wanted my daughter.””

Her silence answered me.

I walked away before I said something I would regret.

I went to the garage.

That was where Emma’s things were.

Boxes.

Dozens of them.

Her artwork.

Her books.

Her toys.

Everything she loved had been packed away.

Like someone was erasing her.

I opened one box.

Inside were notebooks.

The first one was pink.

Emma’s handwriting covered the first page.

I shouldn’t read private things.

I knew that.

But I also knew something was very wrong.

I opened it.

The first entry was dated four months earlier.

“Dear Diary,

Dad thinks everything is okay.

I don’t want him to worry.

I can handle it.””

My vision blurred.

I turned the page.

“I made Claire angry today because I forgot to wash the dishes before homework. She said I was lucky she let me stay here.””

I stopped.

My hands started shaking.

Another page.

“She said my real mom left me because I was difficult.””

I closed my eyes.

No.

No child should hear that.

I kept reading.

“She said Dad will choose work because he always does.””

The garage suddenly felt too small.

I heard footsteps.

Emma stood behind me.

“Dad?””

I turned.

She looked scared.

“I’m sorry.””

I immediately walked toward her.

“No. Don’t apologize.””

“But I didn’t tell you.””

“You were afraid.””

She nodded.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I thought you’d be mad at me.””

I hugged her.

“I could never be mad at you for telling the truth.””

For the first time in months, she cried.

Not quietly.

Not carefully.

Like a child who had been holding everything inside.

Later that afternoon, I called Daniel.

He answered on the second ring.

“Hey, brother.””

I didn’t say hello.

“Why did you sign guardianship papers with Claire?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then he sighed.

“So she finally told you.””

My blood ran cold.

“You knew?””

“Listen, you need to understand—”

“No. You need to answer me.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“She’s not safe with you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You travel constantly. You leave her alone.””

“I leave her with my wife.””

“That’s the problem.””

The room went silent.

“Daniel,” I said slowly, “what are you talking about?””

He hesitated.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“Because Claire isn’t the person you think she is.””

I looked toward the living room.

Claire was standing there.

Watching me.

She knew exactly who I was talking to.

Daniel continued.

“She didn’t marry you because she loved you.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Then why?””

Another pause.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Because she knew about the trust fund your daughter inherited from her mother.””

I looked at Emma’s bedroom door.

The room suddenly felt colder.

Claire wasn’t just trying to control my daughter.

She was trying to control what belonged to her.

May you like

And then Claire walked closer and said something that made me realize Daniel wasn’t telling me everything.

“Ask your brother why he helped me in the first place.””
