Chapter 15: The Necklace That Held the Truth
Claire didn’t move.
She stared at the message.
The color drained from her face.
I had seen Claire angry.
I had seen her manipulate conversations.
I had seen her lie without blinking.
But fear?
Real fear?
I had never seen that.
“Who sent it?””
She locked the phone.
“No one.””
I stepped forward.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
For once, she didn’t have an answer ready.
“It’s complicated.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everything with you is complicated.””
Richard looked at her.
“You still have it?””
Claire’s eyes moved toward him.
“You knew?””
Richard sighed.
“I suspected.””
My anger grew.
“How many people knew about my daughter’s necklace?””
Nobody answered.
That was answer enough.
Emma looked hurt.
“Why did everyone know things except me?””
Her voice was quiet.
The room changed.
Because she wasn’t talking about the necklace anymore.
She was talking about everything.
The secrets.
The lies.
The adults making decisions around her.
I knelt beside her.
“You’re right.””
She looked at me.
“I should have protected you better.””
“Dad…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You spent months thinking you had to be quiet because adults were hiding things.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“That was never your job.””
I hugged her.
Then I stood.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
“Where is the necklace?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“My father has it.””
Everyone turned toward Richard.
“What?””
Richard looked shocked.
“I don’t.””
Claire shook her head.
“You took it from my room.””
“When?””
“After you found out about the documents.””
Richard looked confused.
“I never had the necklace.””
Claire’s face changed.
A realization.
A terrible one.
“Then…”
Her phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, she read it aloud.
“Stop pretending. You know where it is.””
Nobody spoke.
Victor stepped closer.
“Claire, who is threatening you?””
She stared at the message.
Then whispered:
“Andrew.””
The room went silent.
“But Andrew disappeared.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Richard’s face was pale.
“He never disappeared.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then where was he?””
Richard looked at the floor.
“Watching.””
The word felt heavy.
“Watching what?””
“Waiting for the right moment.””
I thought about the cameras.
The SUV.
The person following Emma.
He had been there all along.
Victor immediately grabbed his phone.
“I need to check something.””
He opened the security logs.
Then stopped.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“The camera access changed.””
“When?””
My heart dropped.
“From where?””
Victor stared at the screen.
Then slowly turned it toward us.
The location appeared.
Our house.
I felt cold.
“He’s here.””
Claire covered her mouth.
“No.””
A noise came from upstairs.
A door closing.
Everyone froze.
Emma grabbed my hand.
I whispered:
“Stay behind me.””
We moved toward the stairs.
Every step felt louder.
The hallway was dark.
Empty.
Then we saw it.
Emma’s bedroom door.
Open.
A shadow moved inside.
I stepped forward.
“Andrew.””
No response.
I entered the room.
Nobody was there.
But the window was open.
And sitting on Emma’s bed was the necklace.
Beside it was a small envelope.
My name was written on the front.
Not Sarah’s handwriting.
Not Claire’s.
Andrew’s.
I opened it.
Inside was one sentence.
“Now you finally know who killed Sarah.””
I looked up.
And beneath the sentence was a photograph.
A photograph from the night Sarah died.
A photograph showing someone standing beside her car.
Someone who had been with Sarah until the very end.
Someone I recognized.
May you like
Someone I never expected.
Because the person in the photo was me.
