Chapter 11: The Secret Sarah Left Behind
I read the note again.
Then again.
The words didn’t change.
I know where Sarah hid it.
My hands shook.
Not because of the threat.
Because of the meaning behind it.
Andrew wasn’t just after money.
He was searching for something.
Something Sarah had hidden before she died.
Something important enough that he had spent years hunting for it.
“Emma!””
I ran outside.
The backyard was empty.
The fence gate moved slightly in the wind.
Victor came behind me.
“Did you see anyone?””
“No.””
Claire appeared at the door.
Her face was pale.
“She’s gone?””
I turned toward her.
“Don’t.””
The single word stopped her.
Not because I wanted to punish her.
Because I couldn’t trust her.
Not anymore.
Victor examined the yard.
“Fresh footprints.””
I looked down.
A trail led toward the side street.
My stomach twisted.
“Call the police.””
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
I pulled away.
“Why?””
“Because if Andrew took her, police involvement could make things worse.””
I stared at her.
“You’re worried about the police?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I’m worried about what he’ll do if he thinks we’re closing in.””
That was the first thing Claire said that sounded honest.
I looked at her.
“You knew he was dangerous.””
She didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you bring my daughter into this?””
Her eyes filled.
“I didn’t.””
“You lied to her.””
“I know.””
“You scared her.””
“I know.””
“You made her feel alone.””
Claire looked away.
And for the first time, she whispered:
“I know.””
The apology didn’t fix anything.
It couldn’t.
But I saw something I hadn’t seen before.
Regret.
Victor’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“We have a problem.””
“What?””
He ended the call.
“The police found footage from a traffic camera.””
“Of Emma?””
He nodded.
“Of the person who took her.””
My heart stopped.
“Show me.””
Victor pulled up the video.
A blurry image appeared.
A car.
A person opening the passenger door.
And Emma walking toward it.
Not being dragged.
Walking.
I felt confused.
“She went willingly?””
Victor zoomed in.
Emma’s face appeared.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t fighting.
She looked scared.
But she was following someone.
“Why would she do that?””
Claire whispered:
“Because she knows him.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Claire pointed.
“Look at her expression.””
I watched again.
Emma wasn’t looking at the person like a stranger.
She looked like she recognized him.
Victor paused the video.
“Do you know who he is?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I picked up.
“Where is my daughter?””
A quiet laugh came through.
“You still ask the wrong questions.””
My blood ran cold.
“Andrew.””
Silence.
Then:
“So Sarah did tell you about me.””
“Where is Emma?””
“She’s safe.””
“If you hurt her—”
“You think I’m the villain.””
His voice was calm.
“That’s what Sarah wanted everyone to believe.””
“What did Sarah do?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“She stole something from me.””
I tightened my grip.
“You mean Emma’s inheritance?””
Another pause.
“No.””
My heart raced.
“Then what?””
Andrew’s voice became quieter.
“The truth.””
The call ended.
I looked at Victor.
Then Claire.
Then the empty doorway where Emma’s room stood.
Sarah had left behind secrets.
Claire had hidden lies.
May you like
Daniel had played both sides.
And now my daughter was with the only person who claimed to know what really happened.
