Chapter 17: The Brother’s Last Secret

Daniel was gone.

The back door was open.

Cold air moved through the hallway.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Victor moved.

“He left after the call.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Michael—”

“No.””

I looked around.

“Daniel wouldn’t run.””

But the truth was obvious.

He had.

Claire looked terrified.

“He knew this day would come.””

I turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the floor.

“Daniel has been trying to fix what he helped create.””

“That doesn’t explain why he left.””

Richard sighed.

“Because he knows the truth.””

I looked at him.

“What truth?””

Richard didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“You all keep doing this.””

My voice rose.

“You all know something. You all protect someone. And my daughter pays the price.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

Emma stood quietly near the stairs.

I looked at her.

“Sweetheart, go with Victor.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Emma.””

“I want to know.””

I froze.

She looked at me.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

Her voice trembled.

“But nobody tells me anything.””

I knelt beside her.

“You shouldn’t have to carry this.””

“I already did.””

Those words hurt more than anything.

Because she was right.

I had spent years thinking keeping her away from pain was protection.

But silence had only left her alone.

Victor checked his phone.

“I found Daniel.””

“How?””

“His car.””

“Where?””

He showed me a location.

The old warehouse district.

The place where Sarah’s attorney had stored old records.

My stomach tightened.

“We go now.””

The warehouse was abandoned.

Rust covered the doors.

Dust filled the air.

But someone had been inside recently.

Daniel stood near a table.

He looked exhausted.

Like he had aged ten years overnight.

“You came.””

I walked toward him.

“Why did you leave?””

“Because Andrew called me.””

I stopped.

“What did he say?””

“That you remembered.””

Daniel looked at Emma.

“I knew everything was falling apart.””

I stared at him.

“Tell me the truth.””

He nodded.

“I owe you that.””

He opened a box.

Inside were files.

Hundreds of pages.

“Sarah asked me for help.””

I froze.

“When?””

“Before she died.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she made me promise.””

I felt anger.

“She made you promise to lie to me?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She made me promise to protect Emma.””

He pulled out a document.

“Sarah discovered someone was moving money from the trust.””

I looked at the papers.

“Andrew.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your lawyer.””

I froze.

“The same lawyer who worked with Claire?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He was working with Andrew.””

Everything connected.

The documents.

The guardianship.

The cameras.

The trust.

But there was still one question.

“Why did Sarah die?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Because she found out.””

“Found out what?””

He looked down.

“That the accident wasn’t an accident.””

The words hit me.

“Who caused it?””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Michael…”

“Who?””

He whispered:

“Your lawyer.””

Silence.

Then a sound came from behind us.

A slow clap.

Everyone turned.

A man stood at the warehouse entrance.

Older.

Well dressed.

Calm.

The same calm Claire had.

The same calm Andrew had.

My former lawyer.

“Daniel always was terrible at keeping secrets.””

My blood ran cold.

“You.””

He smiled.

“Hello, Michael.””

Victor moved forward.

The man raised his hands.

“I’m not here to fight.””

“Then why are you here?””

He looked at Emma.

“Because she has something that belongs to me.””

I stepped in front of my daughter.

“No.””

The man smiled.

“Still playing the hero.””

My fists tightened.

“You killed Sarah.””

His smile disappeared.

“No.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“But I know who did.””
