Chapter 7: The Visitor at Midnight
The SUV stopped beneath the porch light.
For a moment, nobody moved.
I stood frozen beside Emma’s window, watching the dark vehicle outside our home.
The engine stayed running.
The headlights cut through the curtains.
Emma grabbed my hand.
“Dad…”
Her voice was barely audible.
I turned toward her.
“It’s okay.””
But even as I said the words, I didn’t believe them.
Because I had spent the last twenty-four hours discovering secrets hidden inside my own house.
And now someone was sitting outside like they had been waiting for me to come home.
I quietly closed the curtains.
“Stay here.””
Emma’s eyes widened.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Sweetheart—”
“Don’t leave me.””
The words stopped me.
Not because they were loud.
Because they sounded like a child who had said them too many times before.
I walked back to her.
“I’m not leaving you.””
She held onto my sleeve.
“Promise?””
I nodded.
“I promise.””
A knock came from downstairs.
Three slow knocks.
Not a neighbor.
Not someone asking for help.
Someone who wanted us to know they were there.
I walked out of Emma’s room.
The hallway felt longer than usual.
At the bottom of the stairs, Claire was already standing there.
She looked nervous.
Actually nervous.
That was new.
“You shouldn’t answer that,” she whispered.
I stopped.
“Why?””
She didn’t respond.
That told me everything.
“Who is it, Claire?””
“No one you need to worry about.””
I stared at her.
“Then why are you scared?””
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
The door knocked again.
This time louder.
I moved toward it.
Claire stepped in front of me.
“Don’t.””
I looked at her.
“You’ve spent months making decisions for everyone in this house.””
I reached for the lock.
“Not anymore.””
I opened the door.
A man stood outside.
He was in his fifties.
Gray jacket.
Tired eyes.
A folder in his hand.
He looked past me into the house.
Then his eyes landed on Claire.
“Richard sent me.””
Claire immediately stepped forward.
“What are you doing here?””
The man ignored her.
He looked at me.
“You must be Michael.””
I didn’t answer.
“Who are you?””
“My name is Victor Hale.””
He held up the folder.
“I’m a private investigator.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why is a private investigator standing outside my house at midnight?””
Victor glanced at Claire.
“Because someone hired me to investigate you.””
Claire went pale.
I turned slowly toward her.
“You hired someone to investigate me?””
“No.””
Her answer came too quickly.
Victor shook his head.
“She didn’t.””
The silence that followed was heavy.
“Then who did?””
Victor looked down at the folder.
“Your brother.””
Daniel.
I felt anger rise again.
“Why?””
Victor hesitated.
“Because he believed your wife was setting you up.””
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Victor finally looked at her.
“Yes, I do.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were printed photos.
Documents.
Reports.
“I’ve been watching this house for six weeks.””
My hands tightened.
“Watching?””
“From a distance.””
Victor looked at Emma’s bedroom.
“I saw things I didn’t understand.””
Claire crossed her arms.
“And now you’re here because?””
“Because tonight changed everything.””
I looked at him.
“What happened tonight?””
Victor handed me a photo.
It showed Claire getting into the SUV outside a hotel.
But the person beside her wasn’t Richard.
It was someone else.
Someone I knew.
Someone who had no reason to be involved.
My face went cold.
“That’s impossible.””
Victor nodded.
“That’s what I thought.””
I looked closer.
The photo was dated three days earlier.
The person standing beside Claire was my attorney.
The man who had helped me create Emma’s inheritance protections after her mother died.
The man who knew every detail about my daughter’s trust.
I looked at Claire.
“Why was my lawyer meeting with you?””
She said nothing.
Victor closed the folder.
“That’s not the only thing.””
“What else?””
He reached into his coat pocket.
A small flash drive.
“I found something on your home network.””
I stared at it.
“What?””
Victor looked serious.
“Someone has been accessing your security cameras.””
My heart dropped.
“Claire?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
The hallway went silent.
“Then who?””
Victor looked directly at Emma’s room.
“The person accessing your cameras wasn’t trying to watch your wife.””
May you like
He paused.
“They were watching your daughter.””
