Chapter 13: The Person Sarah Tried to Expose
The figure stepped into the doorway.
For a second, my mind refused to recognize what I was seeing.
Then the person spoke.
“Michael.””
My entire body went cold.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it at family dinners.
At my wedding.
At every moment when I thought I was surrounded by people who cared about me.
“Daniel.””
My brother stood there.
His face was exhausted.
His clothes were covered in dirt.
But the look in his eyes was worse.
Guilt.
Emma immediately moved closer to me.
“Dad…”
I stepped in front of her.
“What are you doing here?””
Daniel looked past me at the box on the table.
“She found it.””
My jaw tightened.
“You knew this was here.””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The anger that had been building for days finally broke through.
“You knew about Sarah’s letter. You knew about Andrew. You knew what Claire was doing. And you let my daughter suffer.””
His face changed.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to control the situation.””
Daniel looked hurt.
But I didn’t care.
Not anymore.
“You helped Claire with guardianship papers.””
“I did.””
“You met with my lawyer.””
“Yes.””
“You lied to me.””
His voice became quiet.
“Yes.””
Emma held my hand tighter.
I looked at my brother.
“The only question left is why.””
Daniel stared at the floor.
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost laughed.
“You were afraid?””
“Yes.””
He looked up.
“Because Sarah wasn’t killed by Andrew.””
Silence.
The room seemed to stop.
“What did you say?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Sarah discovered Andrew was trying to access Emma’s trust. She planned to expose him.””
He looked at the box.
“But someone found out.””
My chest tightened.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He looked at Claire.
Then at me.
“I thought it was you.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I thought you knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That Sarah was going to change everything.””
I felt dizzy.
Daniel continued.
“She had documents proving someone close to the family had been manipulating accounts.””
My eyes moved to the papers inside the box.
“Who?””
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“She never told me the name.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because I found out later.””
A sound came from behind us.
Claire.
“You knew.””
Everyone turned.
She was staring at Daniel.
“You knew and still helped me.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I was trying to find proof.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“No. You were trying to save yourself.””
I looked between them.
“What is going on?””
Neither answered.
Then Emma spoke.
“I know.””
Everyone looked at her.
My daughter stood there holding a small envelope.
“When Andrew took me, he showed me something.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
She looked down.
“A video.””
“What video?””
She handed me a small memory card.
“I didn’t watch all of it.””
I took it carefully.
“Why?””
“Because Andrew said I needed to see it with you.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then Claire.
Then the card.
Every person in this room had lied to me.
But my daughter had been telling the truth the entire time.
Victor stepped forward.
“We need to see what’s on it.””
We placed the card into his laptop.
A video appeared.
The quality was old.
The date was from twelve years earlier.
Before Sarah died.
A woman appeared on the screen.
My heart shattered.
“Sarah.””
She looked tired.
Scared.
But alive.
“If you’re watching this,” Sarah said, “then I was right.””
I covered my mouth.
Her voice filled the room.
“Someone I trusted betrayed me.””
The video shook slightly.
Sarah looked directly into the camera.
“I don’t know who will find this. But I need Michael to understand one thing.””
She paused.
“Do not blame yourself.””
Tears burned my eyes.
Because those were the words I had needed for years.
Sarah continued.
“Emma is not in danger because of strangers.””
She looked away.
“She is in danger because someone close to us believes they deserve what belongs to her.””
The video flickered.
Then Sarah said the words that changed everything.
“The person behind this has been pretending to protect Emma.””
The screen froze.
Victor checked the file.
“It’s damaged.””
“No.””
I stared.
“Fix it.””
He tried.
The video restarted.
Sarah’s face returned.
And then she said:
“The person you should fear is…”
The screen went black.
A corrupted file.
A missing name.
A truth hidden at the exact moment we needed it.
Then Emma whispered:
“Dad?””
I turned.
She was staring at the doorway.
Someone was standing outside.
Watching us.
May you like
And this time…
It wasn’t Daniel.
