Chapter 4: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

The kitchen became painfully quiet.

Claire stood a few feet away from me, her arms crossed, her expression calm.

Too calm.

She had heard enough of the conversation to know Daniel had exposed something.

But instead of looking afraid, she looked confident.

That scared me more.

I slowly lowered my phone.

“Why did Daniel help you?””

Claire tilted her head.

“I think you should ask him yourself.””

“I just did.””

“And?””

I stared at her.

“He said you knew about Emma’s trust fund.””

For the first time, something flickered across her face.

Not surprise.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

Then she smiled.

“Of course he told you that.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means Daniel is very good at making himself look like the victim.””

I stepped closer.

“Claire, my daughter was sleeping in a room with empty walls while you were preparing legal documents behind my back.””

Her expression hardened.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked toward Emma’s bedroom.

“Not in front of her.””

“No. You don’t get to protect her feelings now.””

That hit something inside her.

Her eyes narrowed.

“You think you’re a perfect father?””

The words landed harder than I expected.

“You’re gone half the year.””

“I work for her.””

“Do you?””

Claire walked toward the counter and picked up her coffee.

“Do you know how many nights Emma cried because you weren’t here?””

My chest tightened.

Because that was the one fear I always carried.

That maybe I had failed her.

Claire saw the hesitation.

She used it.

“She needed someone present.””

“So you punished her?””

“I disciplined her.””

“She’s ten.””

“She’s old enough to understand rules.””

I looked at her.

“What rules?””

Claire didn’t answer.

That silence told me everything.

I left the kitchen and went upstairs.

Emma was sitting on her bed, holding one of her old stuffed animals.

She looked up when I entered.

“Is Claire angry?””

I sat beside her.

“She’s upset.””

“Because of me?””

“No.””

Emma looked away.

“I always make people upset.””

The sentence broke something inside me.

“Emma.””

She looked at me.

“Listen carefully. You are not responsible for adults making bad choices.””

She nodded, but I could tell she didn’t fully believe me yet.

I wanted to fix everything immediately.

I wanted to take her and leave.

But I knew rushing could give Claire a chance to twist the story.

I needed proof.

I needed the truth.

That night, after Emma fell asleep, I opened every document I found.

The guardianship papers.

The emails.

The legal forms.

Most of them were dated months earlier.

Months before Claire ever admitted there was a problem.

Then I found something strange.

A message thread between Claire and Daniel.

My hands went cold as I read.

Claire: “The sooner he signs over temporary authority, the easier this becomes.””

Daniel: “He won’t sign if he knows the real reason.””

Claire: “Then make sure he doesn’t.””

I scrolled further.

There were dozens of messages.

Arguments.

Plans.

Discussions about Emma’s inheritance.

But then I found one message from Daniel.

One sentence.

One sentence that made me stop.

“I’m not doing this because of the money. I’m doing this because I saw what happened when you thought nobody was watching.””

I stared at the screen.

What did that mean?

What had Daniel seen?

Before I could search more, my laptop chimed.

A new email arrived.

The sender was Daniel.

The subject line was simple.

“Watch this before you judge me.””

There was one attachment.

A video file.

I clicked it.

The screen went black.

Then a security camera appeared.

Not mine.

A different house.

A different hallway.

And standing in the middle of the room was Claire.

But she wasn’t alone.

She was talking to someone.

Someone who said my daughter’s name.

Then Claire whispered:

“Once the court approves the arrangement, Emma won’t have a choice.””

I leaned closer.

The other person stepped into view.

And I recognized him immediately.
