Chapter 14: The Final Piece of Sarah’s Puzzle

The person outside stepped forward.

My heart stopped.

It was Richard.

Claire’s father.

The man who had been connected to every secret we uncovered.

But he didn’t look powerful anymore.

He looked old.

Broken.

Like someone who had been running from something for years.

Claire stepped back.

“Dad?””

Richard looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

That was all he said.

Two words.

But they carried years of damage.

I moved between him and Emma.

“You don’t come near my daughter.””

Richard nodded.

“I understand.””

“Do you?””

My voice shook.

“You were involved.””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

No excuses.

No denial.

Just guilt.

Claire stared at him.

“What did you do?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

She laughed.

“You helped destroy my marriage.””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“From what?””

Richard looked at me.

“From losing everything.””

I felt anger rising.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed toward Emma.

“But nobody asks what she lost.””

The room went silent.

Emma looked down.

Richard’s expression changed.

A small crack appeared.

Regret.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice became colder.

“You don’t know what it feels like to watch your child become afraid to speak.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“I know what I did.””

“Then tell me.””

He hesitated.

Then he walked toward the table.

“I found out Andrew was searching for Sarah’s documents after she died.””

Victor watched him carefully.

“Why?””

“Because Sarah discovered Andrew had been moving money.””

My eyes narrowed.

“From the trust?””

Richard nodded.

“He believed he was entitled to it.””

“And you helped him?””

Richard looked ashamed.

“At first.””

Everyone went quiet.

Claire whispered:

“Dad…”

“I thought Andrew was right.””

The words shocked me.

“He was Sarah’s brother.””

Richard continued.

“I thought family mattered more than legal papers.””

“And when you realized he was wrong?””

Richard looked at Emma.

“I was too late.””

I stared at him.

“What happened?””

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“Sarah found out.””

A painful silence followed.

“She confronted Andrew.””

“And?””

Richard looked away.

“Andrew threatened her.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

Richard’s eyes filled.

“I tried.””

I shook my head.

“Trying doesn’t bring her back.””

“No.””

He accepted that.

“It doesn’t.””

The room stayed silent.

Then Victor spoke.

“Richard, you need to tell us everything.””

Richard nodded.

“Sarah made a backup.””

“A backup of what?””

“Everything.””

He pointed at the box.

“The video. The account records. The proof.””

I looked at the box.

“But it’s incomplete.””

Richard nodded.

“Because the final file isn’t there.””

“Where is it?””

He looked at Emma.

My stomach dropped.

“Why are you looking at her?””

Richard’s voice softened.

“Because Sarah trusted her.””

Emma frowned.

“Me?””

Richard nodded.

“Your mother hid the final piece with you.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“She knew nobody would search a child’s things.””

Emma looked confused.

“I don’t have anything.””

Richard stepped closer.

“Think carefully.””

My daughter became quiet.

Then slowly…

Her eyes widened.

“My necklace.””

I looked at her.

“What necklace?””

“The one Mom gave me.””

I froze.

Sarah’s necklace.

The one Emma had worn since she was little.

“The necklace she said I should never lose.””

Richard nodded.

“That’s it.””

I reached for Emma’s hand.

“Where is it?””

She looked terrified.

“Claire took it.””

The room went silent.

Everyone turned.

Claire’s face changed.

“I didn’t.””

Emma shook her head.

“You did.””

“When?””

“The day you said it was too expensive for me to wear.””

Claire’s expression collapsed.

I looked at my wife.

“You have it.””

She didn’t answer.

Then her phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

“Bring the necklace, or Michael learns what really happened to Sarah.””

Claire stared at the screen.

May you like

And for the first time…

She looked completely afraid.
