Chapter 9: The Secret Daniel Never Knew
The file contained medical records.
Old documents.
Reports.
I stared at the first page.
My name.
Daniel Hayes.
Date of birth.
Everything was mine.
But the information underneath made no sense.
“Why do you have this?””
I looked at Marcus.
He didn’t answer.
Sarah did.
“Daniel…”
Her voice sounded terrified.
“What is it?””
She looked at the paper.
Then at Ethan.
Then back at me.
“There’s something you need to know.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I held up the file.
“Everyone knows something except me.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus said:
“That’s because the truth was hidden from you on purpose.””
I stepped toward him.
“You don’t get to act like you’re helping me.””
“I’m not.””
That surprised me.
Marcus looked almost tired.
“I’m trying to finish what Sarah started.””
Sarah looked at him with disgust.
“You’re still lying.””
Marcus smiled.
“Am I?””
The police separated everyone for questioning.
But before they took Marcus away, he left one final sentence.
“Ask Sarah why Ethan’s birth records were changed.””
My heart stopped.
I turned toward my wife.
“Changed?””
Sarah looked away.
That was the answer.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Not another secret.””
She started crying.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
“When?””
“After everything was safe.””
I laughed.
“Safe?””
I pointed around the room.
“Nothing has been safe for nine years.””
Ethan stood silently nearby.
Watching.
Listening.
Too much pain for a child to carry.
I lowered my voice.
“Tell me the truth.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“When Ethan was born…”
She stopped.
Then whispered:
“He was sick.””
My expression changed.
“What does that have to do with his records?””
“He needed a special treatment.””
“Okay.””
“The hospital made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
She looked at me.
“The records showed something impossible.””
My heart pounded.
“What?””
She took a shaky breath.
“They showed Ethan’s biological father wasn’t listed as you.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Ethan.
Then at Sarah.
“No.””
She started crying.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You’re telling me my son isn’t mine?””
Ethan’s face collapsed.
The same fear returned.
The same question from before.
Do you still love me?
I immediately turned toward him.
“Ethan, listen—”
But he stepped away.
Because this time, he wasn’t hearing strangers say it.
He was hearing us.
That night, I sat outside the cabin alone.
My entire life felt like a puzzle someone else had built.
Victoria.
Richard.
Marcus.
Sarah.
Everyone had pieces.
Everyone knew the picture.
Except me.
Sarah came outside.
She sat beside me.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Finally, she said:
“Ethan is your son.””
I looked at her.
“Then why were the records changed?””
“Because Richard changed them.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted you to believe Ethan wasn’t yours.””
I frowned.
“Why would he do that?””
Sarah looked toward the cabin.
“Because Richard knew something.””
“What?””
She whispered:
“Ethan inherited something from you.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“The evidence.””
I didn’t understand.
“What evidence?””
Sarah’s eyes filled with fear.
“The evidence that can destroy Richard.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From Richard.
One sentence.
“You finally found the truth.””
Another message appeared.
“You still don’t know the biggest lie.””
Then a photo loaded.
It was Ethan.
Standing beside Richard.
Alive.
But the message underneath made my blood run cold.
“Your son is not the only child I’ve been hiding from you.””
I looked at Sarah.
She saw the message.
And for the first time…
my wife looked more afraid of Richard than she was of anything else.
Because whatever Richard was hiding…
it was bigger than the fake pregnancy.
May you like
Bigger than the accident.
And bigger than the secret about Ethan.
