Chapter 10: The Child Hidden in the Shadows
The photograph wouldn’t leave my mind.
Ethan standing beside Richard.
The man who had destroyed my family.
The man who had spent years manipulating everyone around me.
But what haunted me most wasn’t the picture.
It was the message.
“You still don’t know the biggest lie.””
I stared at my phone until the screen went dark.
Sarah sat beside me, silent.
She didn’t ask what I was thinking.
She already knew.
“Who is the other child?”” I finally asked.
Her face changed.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
And that told me everything.
“You know.””
Sarah looked down.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I stood up.
“I’m done waiting for answers.””
My voice echoed through the empty night.
“For nine years, I lived with a grave that wasn’t real. For months, I loved a woman who was lying to me. My son was threatened because everyone thought I couldn’t handle the truth.””
I looked at her.
“So tell me.””
She wiped her tears.
“There was another child.””
The words landed like a stone.
“Who?””
Sarah hesitated.
“Someone Richard kept hidden.””
“Why?””
“Because that child was connected to everything.””
I stepped closer.
“Connected how?””
Sarah took a deep breath.
“Before I met you, Richard had a relationship with someone else.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Victoria.””
I froze.
“No.””
“She was younger.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It happened before you knew either of them.””
I walked away.
The pieces were falling together.
Victoria.
Richard.
My wife.
The fake pregnancy.
The wedding.
It wasn’t random.
It was a plan that had started years ago.
“What child?”” I asked again.
Sarah whispered:
“Victoria’s son.””
The next morning, we found Victoria.
She was still being held for questioning, but when I walked into the room, she immediately knew.
“You know.””
I didn’t sit.
“You had a child with Richard.””
Her face went pale.
For a moment, she looked like she might deny it.
Then she didn’t.
“Yes.””
The honesty almost surprised me.
“How old?””
“Nine.””
I stared at her.
Nine.
The same age as Ethan.
“When were you going to tell me?””
She laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
“Never.””
I felt anger rising.
“Why?””
“Because I knew you would leave.””
“You trapped me instead?””
“I was scared.””
Everyone was always scared.
That word had become an excuse.
“You used my son.””
Victoria looked down.
“I know.””
“You lied about being pregnant.””
“I know.””
“You tried to take my home and my company.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
I leaned closer.
“Why?””
Her voice became barely a whisper.
“Because Richard told me he could give my son a better life.””
I froze.
“Your son?””
“Yes.””
She looked up.
“He told me if I helped him, my son would never have to struggle.””
“And what did he want?””
Victoria looked at me.
“You.””
I found Richard’s name in every conversation.
Every lie.
Every broken piece of my life.
But one thing still didn’t make sense.
“Why Ethan?””
Victoria looked terrified.
“Because Ethan saw something.””
“What?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know exactly.””
“You’re lying.””
“I swear.””
She leaned forward.
“Daniel, Richard never cared about the company.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“He cared about what your wife found.””
Sarah had said the same thing.
The evidence.
“What evidence?””
Victoria swallowed.
“The truth about Ethan’s birth.””
Again.
That same sentence.
I was beginning to hate those words.
“What is so important about my son?””
Victoria whispered:
“He was never supposed to exist.””
That afternoon, Sarah and I went through old documents.
Birth records.
Medical reports.
Photos.
Everything.
Then we found it.
A hospital file.
The original.
Not the altered version.
I opened it.
And my hands stopped moving.
The father’s name was listed.
But it wasn’t mine.
It wasn’t anyone I knew.
It was blank.
Instead, there was a handwritten note from the doctor.
“Genetic anomaly requires additional investigation.””
I looked at Sarah.
“What does this mean?””
She looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
Before I could ask more, my phone rang.
A private number.
I answered.
A child’s voice came through.
“Dad?””
My blood froze.
Not Ethan.
Another child.
A boy.
“Who is this?””
The child started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
“Where are you?””
A man grabbed the phone.
Richard.
“You finally understand, Daniel.””
My grip tightened.
“Where is that child?””
Richard laughed softly.
“Where he always was.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means you’ve spent nine years protecting the wrong son.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
May you like
And for the first time…
I wondered if saving Ethan was only the beginning.
