Chapter 5: The Warehouse Secret
The old warehouse looked exactly the way I remembered.
Broken windows.
Rust-covered doors.
A place everyone had forgotten.
Everyone except the people who had secrets buried inside it.
I arrived before sunrise.
The police wanted me to wait.
I didn’t.
My son was somewhere in that building—or had been there before—and waiting felt impossible.
I pushed open the damaged side door.
The smell hit me first.
Dust.
Oil.
Old paper.
Then I heard something.
A sound.
A chair moving.
“Ethan?””
No answer.
I walked deeper inside.
“Ethan!””
A small voice finally responded.
“Dad?””
I followed the sound.
And there he was.
My son.
Sitting in a storage room.
His hands were tied loosely with rope, but he was unharmed.
I rushed forward.
“Are you okay?””
He grabbed me tightly.
“I knew you would come.””
I held him.
“I’m sorry.””
He pulled back.
“Dad, we don’t have much time.””
I froze.
“What do you mean?””
He looked terrified.
“Marcus didn’t bring me here because of the wedding.””
“Then why?””
“Because I found something.””
I untied him.
“What did you find?””
Ethan looked toward the old shelves.
“Mom’s box.””
My heart stopped.
“What box?””
“The one Richard took.””
I stared at him.
“Ethan, slow down.””
He shook his head.
“No. You need to understand.””
He took a small flash drive from his pocket.
“I found this hidden inside the warehouse last month.””
I stared at it.
“You had this the whole time?””
He nodded.
“I was going to tell you.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
His eyes filled.
“Because Victoria found out.””
The anger returned.
“What did she do?””
“She told me if I gave it to you, something bad would happen.””
My jaw tightened.
“She threatened you.””
“She didn’t say it directly.””
He looked down.
“She said Marcus could make people disappear.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“What’s on it?””
Ethan whispered:
“Mom’s final recording.””
We found an old computer in the office.
The screen flickered when I inserted the flash drive.
For a few seconds, nothing happened.
Then a video appeared.
My wife’s face filled the screen.
I forgot how to breathe.
It was her.
Alive.
Speaking.
Looking directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, something happened to me.””
My knees almost gave out.
Ethan stood beside me.
My wife continued.
“Daniel, I need you to know that Richard is not who he says he is.””
I closed my eyes.
I already knew.
But hearing it from her was different.
“He has been stealing from the company for years.””
The video shook slightly.
Like she was recording in a hurry.
“And he knows I found out.””
A noise came from somewhere behind her.
She turned.
Then lowered her voice.
“If anything happens to me, do not trust anyone who suddenly appears offering help.””
The screen froze.
Then another voice appeared.
A man’s voice.
Richard.
My hands became fists.
My wife looked terrified.
The video ended.
But before it disappeared, a final file opened automatically.
A recording.
A conversation.
Richard’s voice.
And Victoria’s.
I looked at Ethan.
He looked back at me.
Because now we understood.
Victoria wasn’t just a woman trying to marry me.
She was connected to the people who destroyed my family.
The recording played.
Richard said:
“Once Daniel marries her, everything becomes easier.””
Victoria answered:
“But what about the boy?””
Richard laughed.
“That’s why we need to handle Ethan first.””
I felt the room spinning.
Then Victoria said something that made me freeze.
“Daniel can never know that Ethan isn’t his son.””
The recording stopped.
I stared at the screen.
Ethan stared at me.
Neither of us spoke.

Because suddenly, the biggest question wasn’t who kidnapped my son.
It was whether my entire life had been built on another lie.
