Chapter 12: The Truth Beneath the Lies
The next morning, I made a decision.
I stopped chasing Richard’s story.
I started uncovering my own.
Because every person involved had been telling me pieces.
Richard.
Victoria.
Marcus.
Sarah.
But nobody had told me why.
Why my family?
Why my son?
Why nine years of lies?
The answer was hidden somewhere.
And I was going to find it.
The detective brought us new information.
“We found the original hospital records.””
I looked at the folder.
“Original?””
“Yes.””
“Not the altered ones?””
“No.””
Sarah looked nervous.
“What did they show?””
The detective opened the file.
“Ethan’s DNA results were never completed.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The sample was taken, but the report was replaced.””
“By who?””
The detective looked at me.
“Your business partner.””
Richard.
Again.
“Why?””
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””
I looked at Sarah.
She looked away.
And I knew.
There was still something she wasn’t telling me.
“Sarah.””
She closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For knowing.””
The room went quiet.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“I suspected.””
My chest tightened.
“You suspected Ethan wasn’t mine?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I suspected Richard wanted you to believe that.””
That changed everything.
“He was trying to separate us.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Sarah looked at Ethan.
Then at me.
“Because Richard knew something about you.””
I frowned.
“About me?””
She nodded.
“Something your parents hid.””
My stomach dropped.
“My parents?””
“Yes.””
I laughed.
A tired, broken laugh.
“So now my entire life is a mystery?””
Sarah reached for my hand.
“I never wanted this.””
“But you knew.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
That night, I went through old family records.
My parents had passed away years ago.
But I found something hidden in a storage box.
A letter.
Never opened.
My name was written on the front.
The handwriting was my father’s.
I opened it.
The first sentence changed everything.
“Daniel, if you are reading this, then Richard has probably found out.””
I stopped.
How did my father know Richard?
I kept reading.
“Your mother and I spent our lives protecting something that was never ours to keep.””
My heart raced.
“We protected a child.””
I froze.
A child.
Another one.
The letter continued.
“A child who was born from a mistake, but became family.””
I looked at the page.
My hands shaking.
Then I saw the name.
The name written at the bottom.
The name that made the entire room disappear.
Ethan.
No.
Impossible.
I read it again.
My father’s words were clear.
“We raised Daniel to protect him.””
The letter fell from my hand.
I couldn’t breathe.
Because the biggest secret wasn’t that Ethan wasn’t my son.
It was that I might never have known…
I was never his father.
I was his brother.
My phone suddenly rang.
Richard.
I answered.
For the first time, I didn’t feel afraid.
“What do you want?””
His voice was calm.
“You found the letter.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Then you finally understand.””
“Understand what?””
Richard whispered:
“That Ethan was never the child I was trying to destroy.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He was the child I was trying to get back.””
The line went silent.
Then Richard said:
“And Daniel…”
My grip tightened.
“The boy you raised isn’t the only person who was stolen from his family.””
The call ended.
I stared at Ethan sleeping in the next room.
Because the truth was no longer about who his father was.
It was about who had the right to claim him.

And I realized Richard wasn’t trying to expose a secret.
He was trying to take my son away.
