Chapter 6: The Truth About Ethan

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

The warehouse was silent.

Too silent.

I looked at Ethan.

My son.

The boy I raised.

The boy who called me Dad every morning.

The boy who held my hand at his mother’s funeral.

And now there was a recording suggesting the one thing I never imagined.

That he wasn’t mine.

“Dad?””

His voice pulled me back.

I forced myself to breathe.

“Ethan…”

He looked scared.

“What did they mean?””

I didn’t have an answer.

And that was the hardest part.

Because I had always been the person who knew what to say.

When Ethan had nightmares.

When he missed his mother.

When he asked why life had to hurt.

I always had an answer.

But not this time.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Do you still love me?””

That question hurt more than anything.

I dropped to my knees.

“Ethan.””

He looked away.

“I heard what they said.””

I grabbed his shoulders gently.

“Listen to me.””

His eyes met mine.

“Nothing changes that.””

“But if I’m not your son…”

I interrupted him.

“You are my son.””

The words came out immediately.

Before logic.

Before proof.

Before anything.

“You are my son because I was there.””

My voice broke.

“I taught you how to ride a bike. I held you when you were sick. I stayed awake when you had nightmares. I was there.””

I pressed my forehead against his.

“DNA doesn’t erase nine years of love.””

For the first time that night, Ethan cried.

And I held him.

The police arrived minutes later.

They took Ethan for medical checks and questioned him about Marcus.

But before leaving the warehouse, Ethan grabbed my arm.

“Dad.””

“What?””

“There’s something else.””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked toward the office.

“Marcus didn’t bring me here alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who was with him?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Victoria.””

I froze.

“She was here?””

He nodded.

“She argued with Marcus.””

“About what?””

Ethan looked nervous.

“She said the plan was supposed to end after the wedding.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What plan?””

“She said she never agreed to hurt me.””

My anger disappeared for a moment.

Because that meant something.

Victoria wasn’t just following Marcus.

Maybe she was afraid of him.

Maybe she had been trapped too.

But then Ethan continued.

“She told Marcus she wanted to tell you the truth.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t she?””

His expression changed.

“Because Marcus showed her something.””

“What?””

Ethan hesitated.

“A picture.””

“What picture?””

“My mom.””

The world stopped again.

“What about your mom?””

“She was alive in the picture.””

I stared at him.

Impossible.

My wife had been dead for years.

But Ethan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I took it before Marcus found me.””

I opened it.

A photograph.

Old.

Damaged.

But clear enough.

My wife was standing beside a man.

A man I recognized immediately.

Richard.

And beside them…

was Victoria.

Years before she ever met me.

My hands started shaking.

Victoria had lied.

Richard had lied.

Marcus had lied.

But the worst part was this:

They had all known my wife before she died.

My phone suddenly rang.

Victoria.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Daniel, you need to listen to me.””

“Why were you in that photo?””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Because I was there the night your wife disappeared.””

I stopped breathing.

“What did you say?””

A sob escaped her.

“Daniel…”

“What happened that night?””

Another pause.

Then her voice dropped.

“She didn’t die in the accident.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What?””

Victoria whispered:

“Your wife survived.””

The call crackled.

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“And Daniel… she has been hiding from you for nine years.””
