Chapter 18: The First Secret

The words stayed on the screen.

Daniel Hayes was the first secret.

I stared at them.

My whole life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

Every memory.

Every relationship.

Every loss.

Connected to something I never knew existed.

Michael pulled me away from the screen.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“What does he mean?””

My brother didn’t answer.

And that terrified me.

Because Michael was the one person who had spent his life knowing the truth.

“You knew.””

He looked down.

“I knew pieces.””

“What pieces?””

“That you weren’t supposed to exist.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“What?””

Michael sat down.

“When our parents had you, there was a reason they hid your records.””

I felt numb.

“Why?””

“Because of Richard.””

“Again Richard.””

Michael nodded.

“He was searching for someone.””

“Who?””

“You.””

I laughed.

A broken laugh.

“Why?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because you were the missing heir.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

“Neither did I.””

He handed me an old envelope.

“Until I found this.””

Inside was a letter.

Not from my father.

From someone else.

A woman.

The handwriting looked unfamiliar.

The first line said:

“Daniel, if you ever learn the truth, know that I loved you.””

I looked at Michael.

“Who wrote this?””

He answered quietly.

“Your biological mother.””

The room went silent.

I stopped breathing.

“My mother?””

“The woman you were told died when you were born.””

I sat down.

Everything broke apart.

I had spent my entire life believing I knew where I came from.

But I didn’t.

Not even close.

The letter explained everything.

My parents had adopted me.

They raised me as their own.

But they weren’t my biological parents.

They were protecting me.

Because my real family had been targeted by Richard’s family decades earlier.

I wasn’t connected to Richard because of Ethan.

Ethan was connected to Richard because of me.

The bloodline.

The evidence.

The reason Richard had spent years controlling everyone around me.

I was the person he had been searching for.

Not my son.

Me.

I found Richard after midnight.

He was still in custody.

But he looked like he expected me.

“You know now.””

I stood behind the glass.

“Who am I?””

He smiled.

“That’s the question you should have asked twenty years ago.””

“Answer me.””

He leaned closer.

“You’re the reason my family lost everything.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Your biological grandfather exposed my family.””

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

Richard’s eyes darkened.

“He destroyed everything we built.””

I stared.

“So this was revenge?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Revenge would have been easy.””

“Then what?””

Richard smiled.

“Restoration.””

I felt disgusted.

“You destroyed children’s lives.””

“I gave them purpose.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You used them.””

Richard looked at me.

“You still don’t understand.””

He leaned back.

“The world belongs to people who control the truth.””

Before I left, Richard said one final thing.

“Ask Sarah what happened the night Ethan was born.””

I stopped.

“What?””

His smile returned.

“She’s still hiding the biggest part.””

I turned around.

“Enough.””

But Richard laughed.

“Daniel.””

I looked back.

“Your wife didn’t just disappear nine years ago.””

A pause.

“She disappeared because she found out what you were.””

I returned home.

Sarah was awake.

Waiting.

She saw my face.

And immediately knew.

“He told you.””

I froze.

“You knew.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The anger came instantly.

“You knew who I was?””

“Yes.””

“Since when?””

“Before I married you.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“You married me knowing my entire identity was a lie?””

Sarah cried.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at me.

“I married you because I loved you.””

“Then why hide everything?””

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“From what?””

Sarah whispered:

“From the family you were born into.””

I stepped back.

“What family?””

She looked toward Ethan’s room.

Then at me.

“Daniel…”

Her voice trembled.

“Your biological father is alive.””

I froze.

No.

Not another impossible truth.

“Where?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with fear.

“He has been watching you.””

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

One sentence.

A number I didn’t recognize.

“Daniel, I’m sorry I stayed away.””

I stared at the screen.

The message continued.

“But Richard was right about one thing.””

A photo loaded.

A man standing outside my house.

A man I had never seen.

But somehow…

I knew exactly who he was.

May you like

The message finished:

“I am your father.””
