Chapter 13: The Son I Chose

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat beside Ethan’s bedroom door, listening to him breathe.

The same boy I had carried when he was a baby.

The same boy who used to fall asleep on my shoulder.

The same boy who called me Dad without hesitation.

Now there was a question hanging over us.

Not because of what Ethan was.

Because of what other people wanted him to be.

Richard wanted a child.

A symbol.

A piece of a hidden story.

But he forgot one thing.

Ethan wasn’t a possession.

He was a person.

And he was my son.

The next morning, Sarah found me in the kitchen.

She looked exhausted.

“You read the letter.””

I didn’t answer.

She sat across from me.

“Daniel…”

“How long did you know?””

She looked down.

“About what?””

“About my father.””

Silence.

“That he knew Ethan wasn’t just any child.””

Sarah swallowed.

“I knew there were secrets.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She closed her eyes.

“I found out after the accident.””

I stared at her.

“After you disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone is always afraid.””

She looked hurt.

But I continued.

“Do you understand what everyone’s fear did?””

My voice cracked.

“It left me raising a child while the entire world knew something I didn’t.””

Sarah wiped her tears.

“I thought hiding the truth would protect him.””

“And did it?””

She looked toward Ethan’s room.

“No.””

Later that day, Richard contacted us.

Not through a hidden number.

Not through threats.

Through his lawyer.

A formal letter arrived.

He was requesting custody.

Of Ethan.

The words felt unreal.

“Custody?”” I said.

The detective nodded.

“He claims he is Ethan’s biological father.””

My hands tightened around the paper.

“He has no proof.””

“He has documents.””

“What documents?””

The detective hesitated.

“Birth records.””

I looked at Sarah.

She looked terrified.

“Those records were changed.””

“Yes.””

“Then why are they accepting them?””

“Because they appear official.””

That was Richard’s specialty.

Making lies look like truth.

That evening, Ethan found me holding the papers.

“Is this about me?””

I immediately hid my expression.

“No.””

He gave me a look.

A look only a child who had grown up around secrets could give.

“Dad.””

I sighed.

“Yes.””

He sat beside me.

“What did they find?””

I looked at him.

And I made a choice.

No more lies.

“Someone is trying to say they have a right to take you away.””

His face changed.

“Who?””

“Richard.””

Ethan went quiet.

Then he asked:

“Do you believe him?””

The question surprised me.

“No.””

“Why?””

I thought about it.

Then answered honestly.

“Because being a father isn’t only about how someone becomes your parent.””

Ethan looked at me.

“It’s about who stays.””

His eyes filled.

“I’m scared.””

“I am too.””

“What if he wins?””

I held his hand.

“Then we fight.””

That night, we discovered Richard’s biggest mistake.

He had underestimated Victoria.

She contacted us.

Not secretly.

Not through a hidden message.

She walked into the police station and asked to speak.

“I want to make a statement.””

The detective looked surprised.

“About what?””

She looked at me.

“About Richard.””

We sat across from her.

She looked nothing like the confident bride from weeks ago.

She looked like someone who had finally accepted the damage she caused.

“I helped him.””

I didn’t respond.

“I know what I did.””

Her voice shook.

“But Richard never wanted the company.””

“Then what did he want?””

She looked at Ethan.

“He wanted a child.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Victoria continued.

“He believed Ethan was the key to something your father hid.””

“My father?””

She nodded.

“Richard spent years searching for information about your family.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed your father took something from him.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Victoria looked at the detective.

Then at me.

“A child.””

My heart stopped.

Another child.

Another secret.

But then she said something I never expected.

“Richard’s biological son was never his.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Victoria whispered:

“Richard spent nine years believing Ethan was the child he lost.””

I stared at her.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does when you know the truth.””

She took a deep breath.

“Ethan wasn’t stolen from Richard.””

May you like

She looked at me.

“Richard was the one who stole Ethan.””
