Chapter 15: The Brother Who Vanished
The man in the picture was impossible.
For my entire life, I believed I was an only child.
My parents never mentioned a brother.
No stories.
No photographs.
No memories.
Nothing.
But now there was proof.
A face.
A name.
A missing piece of my own family.
I showed Sarah.
She looked away.
“You knew.””
It wasn’t a question.
She nodded.
“I knew there was someone.””
“Who?””
“Your brother.””
My anger returned.
“You knew I had a brother and never told me?””
She cried.
“I didn’t know how.””
“You always say that.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps protecting me from the truth.””
I looked at the photograph.
“And somehow the truth keeps destroying us anyway.””
The man’s name was Michael Hayes.
My brother.
According to the information we found, he had disappeared when he was seventeen.
Officially, he was declared missing.
But there was no investigation.
No search.
No news.
Just silence.
My father had erased him.
But why?
The answer came from an old journal.
My mother’s journal.
Inside was a sentence written twenty years earlier.
“Michael knows what Richard did.””
I stopped reading.
Another page.
“Daniel cannot know yet.””
Another.
“If Richard finds Michael, he will use him against us.””
I closed the journal.
Richard.
Always Richard.
The man had been connected to my family long before I met him.
Michael agreed to meet us.
Not in public.
Not somewhere safe.
Somewhere private.
A small house outside the city.
When I arrived, my hands were shaking.
The door opened.
And there he was.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
I saw pieces of myself.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
He looked at me for a long time.
Then whispered:
“Daniel.””
I couldn’t speak.
He stepped closer.
“You look exactly like Dad.””
I laughed sadly.
“I don’t even know who Dad was anymore.””
Michael looked down.
“He wanted to protect us.””
“From what?””
He looked behind me.
“From Richard.””
Inside the house, Michael explained everything.
Richard wasn’t just a criminal.
He was obsessed.
Years ago, Richard discovered that my father had hidden evidence against him.
But my father wasn’t the only person who knew.
Michael did too.
“What evidence?””
Michael looked at me.
“The truth about Richard’s family.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Richard was never born into the family he claimed.””
I didn’t understand.
“He changed his identity.””
“Why?””
“Because his real family was connected to something much bigger.””
Michael handed me a folder.
Inside were old records.
Names.
Dates.
Photos.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
A name I recognized.
Victoria’s son.
I looked up.
“What does this mean?””
Michael’s face became serious.
“It means Richard has been searching for his real heir.””
“His son?””
“No.””
Michael shook his head.
“Someone else.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“Ethan.””
Silence.
Again.
Always Ethan.
“Why?””
“Because Richard believes Ethan carries something passed down through your family.””
“The evidence?””
Michael nodded.
“But not just evidence.””
“What else?””
He hesitated.
“Power.””
I almost laughed.
“Power?””
“Not money.””
He looked at the documents.
“Control.””
Before I could ask more, the lights went out.
Everyone froze.
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Michael looked terrified.
“He found us.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
Because we all knew.
Richard.
The front window shattered.
A voice came from outside.
“Daniel.””
My blood went cold.
Richard.
“You should have stayed away from family secrets.””
Michael grabbed my arm.
“Take Ethan and leave.””
I looked at him.
“What about you?””
He looked toward the door.
“I’ve been running from Richard for twenty years.””
A pause.
“Tonight, I stop.””
The door slowly opened.
And Richard stepped inside.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was a child.
The same boy from the video.
Richard smiled.
“Daniel.””
He looked at Ethan.
“Meet your cousin.””
My son stared at the child.
Confused.
Then the child spoke.
A sentence that made everyone silent.
“I know why Richard wants Ethan.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
May you like
The boy’s eyes filled with fear.
“Because Ethan is the only person who can prove Richard killed my mother.””
