Chapter 11: Richard’s Final Game
Richard wanted me confused.
That was his strategy.
Fear.
Doubt.
Questions with no answers.
Because a confused man was easier to control.
But he forgot one thing.
I was a father.
And fathers don’t stop looking.
The police traced the call.
The location was abandoned.
Of course it was.
Richard wanted us chasing shadows.
But the investigation uncovered something else.
A hidden account.
A payment trail.
And one name appeared again and again.
Victoria.
“She wasn’t working alone,” the detective told me.
I stared at the documents.
“I know.””
“You should prepare yourself.””
“For what?””
He looked at Sarah.
“Because this involves more people than we thought.””
That evening, I finally sat down with Ethan.
No secrets.
No hiding.
Just the truth.
“Buddy.””
He looked at me.
“I need you to know something.””
He waited.
“No matter what happens, you are my son.””
He nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“You do?””
He smiled sadly.
“Because you told me.””
I felt tears in my eyes.
“But I’m scared.””
“So am I.””
That surprised him.
“You are?””
“Yes.””
I held his hand.
“Adults get scared too.””
He looked at the floor.
“Do you think Mom lied?””
I thought about Sarah.
About everything she hid.
“I think your mom was trying to protect us.””
“Was she right?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
The honesty mattered.
“She made choices that hurt us.””
Ethan nodded.
Then he asked:
“Will you hate her?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because I didn’t know.
Love and betrayal were sometimes sitting in the same room.
Later that night, Sarah found me outside.
“You talked to Ethan.””
“Yes.””
“How did he take it?””
“Better than I did.””
She smiled sadly.
“He always was stronger than us.””
I looked at her.
“Tell me about the other child.””
Sarah became serious.
“I don’t know everything.””
“Tell me what you know.””
She took a breath.
“Richard had a son.””
“With Victoria.””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide him?””
“Because Richard was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of proving he was not the smartest person in the room.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Richard believed he controlled everyone.””
She paused.
“But there was someone else controlling him.””
The words caught my attention.
“Who?””
Sarah shook her head.
“I never found out.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
A video.
I opened it.
The screen showed Richard.
Sitting in a dark room.
But he wasn’t alone.
Beside him stood a young boy.
The child from the phone call.
Richard smiled.
“Daniel.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“I know you have questions.””
The boy looked directly into the camera.
And something about his face felt familiar.
Richard continued.
“The problem with secrets is that eventually someone wants the truth.””
He leaned closer.
“Your wife wanted it.””
A pause.
“Your son inherited it.””
Another pause.
“And now you’re going to lose everything because of it.””
The video ended.
I stared at the screen.
Then Ethan walked into the room.
“Dad?””
I quickly locked the phone.
But he saw my face.
“What happened?””
I looked at my son.
And realized Richard had created the perfect trap.
May you like
Because now I had two children connected to his secrets.
And I didn’t know which one he was trying to destroy.
