Chapter 9: The Evidence Mark Never Found
I didn’t move for several seconds.
The phone felt heavy against my ear.
“What did you say?””
Ava’s breathing was shaky.
“I said Mark knew.””
“No.””
The word came out automatically.
Not because I didn’t believe her.
Because believing her meant accepting something I wasn’t ready to accept.
My husband wasn’t just weak.
He wasn’t just afraid.
He had made choices.
Choices that put our daughter in danger.
“Ava, send me the recording.””
“I will.””
A pause.
“But Chloe?””
“Yes?””
“Listen to it alone.””
I looked toward Lily’s room.
“I’m not leaving my daughter.””
“I don’t mean physically alone.””
Her voice softened.
“I mean don’t let Mark know you heard it.””
The message arrived seconds later.
A file.
No name.
Just a date.
The date was one month before Thanksgiving.
I opened it.
Static filled the speaker.
Then Megan’s voice.
“She’s getting harder to control.””
My stomach tightened.
Mark answered.
“Lower your voice.””
I stopped breathing.
It was him.
A month earlier.
“Megan, I told you to stop.””
“You told me that last time.””
A pause.
Then Megan laughed.
“She doesn’t respect me.””
Mark sighed.
“She’s a kid.””
“Exactly. Kids remember fear.””
My hand flew to my mouth.
The recording continued.
Mark sounded uncomfortable.
“You can’t keep doing this.””
Megan replied:
“Then make Chloe stop defending her.””
Silence.
Then Mark said:
“I’ll handle Chloe.””
I felt something inside me collapse.
The recording continued.
“And Lily?””
Megan asked.
A long pause.
Then:
“Just keep her away from you until Thanksgiving.””
My eyes filled with tears.
Because I remembered Thanksgiving.
I remembered Megan sitting beside Lily.
I remembered Mark telling me I was overreacting.
He knew.
He knew she was a threat.
And he still brought us there.
The recording ended.
I sat frozen.
Then my phone rang.
Mark.
I stared at his name.
Once upon a time, seeing it made me smile.
Now it made me feel sick.
I answered.
“What?””
His voice was careful.
“Chloe, we need to talk.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“No.””
A pause.
Then he said:
“I know you found Ava.””
My heart stopped.
“How?””
“I saw the message.””
I looked at my phone.
Impossible.
Then I noticed something.
A small notification.
A connected device.
My stomach dropped.
“Mark.””
“What?””
“You’re still connected to my phone.””
Silence.
Then:
“Chloe…”
“You’ve been monitoring me?””
“No.””
“You saw my messages.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“Protect me?””
My voice shook.
“You don’t even know what that word means.””
He became quiet.
Then he whispered:
“Listen to me. Ava is angry. She wants revenge.””
“No.””
I looked at the recording.
“She wants the truth.””
“Chloe, you don’t understand what happened.””
“I understand enough.””
I ended the call.
Then I heard footsteps.
I turned.
Lily was standing in the hallway.
Her face was pale.
“Mommy?””
I immediately walked toward her.
“What happened?””
She looked down.
“I heard Daddy.””
My heart stopped.
“When?””
“Just now.””
She hugged herself.
“He was outside.””
I frowned.
“What did he say?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He said…”
She swallowed.
“He said he should have taken care of the problem before Thanksgiving.””
I froze.
“What problem?””
Lily looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“He was talking about me.””
