Chapter 4: The Message From the Missing Brother
The paper trembled between my fingers.
Not because it was heavy.
Because it carried the name of a man everyone had spent three years convincing me to forget.
Daniel.
Mark’s brother.
The man who supposedly abandoned his family.
The man Mark had called “dangerous.””
The man who, according to my husband, had walked away because he couldn’t handle his own mistakes.
But now his handwriting was sitting in my hands.
And it was hidden inside Mark’s phone case.
I looked up.
“Why did you have this?””
Mark’s face had lost all its color.
“Chloe, give me the paper.””
I held it tighter.
“No.””
“Please.””
That word sounded different this time.
Not controlling.
Not annoyed.
Desperate.
I unfolded the note completely.
The handwriting was rushed, like someone had written it quickly before running out of time.
*Chloe, if you are reading this, Mark didn’t tell you the truth. Ask him why I left. Ask him what happened the night I disappeared.*
My stomach twisted.
I looked at Mark.
“What night?””
He didn’t answer.
“Mark.””
He looked toward the floor.
“Chloe, this isn’t something you need to be involved in.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“My husband’s brother disappeared, and you think I don’t need to be involved?””
Megan stepped forward.
“Daniel was always dramatic.””
I turned toward her.
“Funny. Everyone who tells the truth in this family seems to be called dramatic.””
Her expression hardened.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“No,” I said.
“But I’m starting to.””
Evelyn quietly walked toward the table and picked up the recording device.
“There is more.””
Mark looked at her.
“Grandma.””
She ignored him.
“You only heard the beginning.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew?””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Daniel gave me a copy before he left.””
Mark’s eyes widened.
“You said you destroyed it.””
“I lied.””
The room went silent.
Even Megan looked shocked.
Evelyn looked at Lily.
“Some secrets stay buried because people are afraid of what happens when they come out.””
I looked at Mark.
“And what happens when this one comes out?””
Nobody answered.
The recording started again.
Static.
Then Daniel’s voice.
“You can’t keep covering for her, Mark.””
My husband closed his eyes.
I listened.
“I’m not covering for anyone,” Mark’s younger brother said.
“You are,” Daniel replied.
“You know exactly what Megan did.””
Then Megan’s voice appeared.
“You’re acting like you’re better than everyone.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“No. I’m acting like I don’t want a child to pay for your mistakes.””
My heart stopped.
A child.
I looked at Mark.
“What child?””
He didn’t respond.
The recording continued.
Megan’s voice became sharper.
“You don’t understand anything.””
Daniel answered.
“I understand enough. Lily is already scared of you.””
My breath caught.
Lily looked up from the couch.
“What?””
I immediately covered her hand.
“Nothing, sweetheart.””
But my mind was racing.
Daniel knew.
He knew Megan had been cruel to my daughter.
He knew something had happened before this Thanksgiving.
And Mark knew too.
I turned to my husband.
“You knew she was scared of Megan?””
Mark looked away.
“Chloe…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say my name like that.””
I pointed toward Lily.
“She trusted you.””
Mark swallowed.
“I thought I could handle it.””
“Handle what?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the problem.
He never answered.
He just waited until the storm passed.
But this time, I wasn’t letting it pass.
I grabbed my coat.
“I’m taking Lily home.””
Mark stepped forward.
“Chloe, don’t do this.””
I stared at him.
“You watched your sister hurt our daughter.””
His face tightened.
“I didn’t know she would do that.””
“But you knew enough to hide things.””
The silence that followed felt final.
Lily slowly stood up and grabbed my hand.
Before we reached the door, Evelyn spoke.
“Chloe.””
I turned.
She looked at me sadly.
“Before you leave, you need to hear the last part.””
I hesitated.
“What last part?””
Evelyn pressed play.
The recording continued.
Daniel’s voice came through again.
“If anything happens to me, Chloe needs to know one thing.””
My body went cold.
Mark immediately moved toward the device.
But Evelyn stopped him.
“Let her hear.””
Daniel continued.
“Mark didn’t just protect Megan.””
A pause.
“He helped her hide what happened to my daughter.””
I stopped breathing.
My eyes moved slowly toward Mark.
“My daughter?””
Daniel’s voice continued.
“And if Chloe ever finds out, she needs to know the truth about why Lily was never told she had a cousin.””
The recording cut off.
And I realized the secret Mark had buried wasn’t just about Megan.
May you like
It was about a child.
A child I had never known existed.
