Chapter 17: The Person Mark Ran To
The location was an abandoned warehouse on the edge of town.
Detective Harris wanted to send officers immediately.
I agreed.
But there was something inside me that needed answers.
Not revenge.
Not anger.
Answers.
Because my entire marriage had been built on missing pieces.
When we arrived, police surrounded the building.
A few minutes later, an officer approached.
“He’s inside.””
My heart tightened.
“Who is with him?””
The officer looked at his notes.
“Daniel.””
I froze.
Daniel.
Alive.
Finally.
The door opened.
Mark walked out first.
His face looked exhausted.
Behind him was a man I recognized from old family photos.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Daniel.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Daniel looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
Those were the first words he said.
Not an explanation.
Not a defense.
An apology.
I stared at him.
“You let me believe you abandoned everyone.””
His eyes filled with pain.
“I know.””
“Why?””
He looked at Mark.
Then back at me.
“Because I was trying to stay alive.””
The words shocked me.
“What?””
Daniel looked at Detective Harris.
“Can we talk somewhere safe?””
Inside the warehouse, Daniel finally told the story he had carried alone.
After Emma died, he had tried to report everything.
But Mark had convinced him nobody would believe him.
Then something worse happened.
“Megan wasn’t the only person covering it up.””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“She had help.””
I felt sick.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Mark.
“Mark.””
I already knew.
But hearing it from him still hurt.
“Then why come back now?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Because I saw what happened at Thanksgiving.””
My chest tightened.
“You were there?””
“Not inside.””
He looked down.
“I saw Lily crying outside.””
A pause.
“And I saw Mark defend Megan.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That was when I knew he hadn’t changed.””
Mark looked away.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
Daniel continued.
“I stayed hidden because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of Mark?””
“Yes.””
I looked at my husband.
“Why?””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Because Mark has always been good at making people believe they are the problem.””
The sentence hit me.
Because I knew exactly what he meant.
“He did it to me.””
Daniel nodded.
“He did it to everyone.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“We need to know about Mark’s first marriage.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You found out about that?””
I looked at him.
“What does it have to do with this?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“Everything.””
He explained that Mark’s first wife, Rachel, had discovered Megan’s behavior years earlier.
She wanted to expose her.
But shortly after, their marriage ended.
“She knew too much,” Daniel said.
I felt a chill.
“What happened to her?””
“She disappeared from their lives.””
“Like you?””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly like me.””
Mark finally spoke.
“Stop.””
Everyone turned.
His voice was broken.
“You don’t know what you’re saying.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I know exactly what I’m saying.””
Mark stepped closer.
“I made mistakes.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“You made choices.””
The same words I had said.
The same truth.
Then an officer entered holding a phone.
“Detective.””
He looked serious.
“We found something in Mark’s car.””
“What?””
The officer handed him a small evidence bag.
Inside was a second flash drive.
Detective Harris looked at Mark.
“Where did you get this?””
Mark didn’t answer.
Daniel stared at the drive.
Then whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
May you like
Daniel’s face went pale.
“That’s the original.””
