Chapter 13: The Man Who Wanted to Be Forgiven

Mark stood in the doorway like he had been expecting this moment.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Waiting.

That was what terrified me most.

He wasn’t shocked to see me holding the flash drive.

He was afraid because I finally knew where the truth was hidden.

Ava stepped in front of me.

“You followed us.””

Mark looked at her.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Her expression hardened.

“You don’t get to tell me where I belong.””

His eyes moved back to me.

“Chloe.””

I held up the flash drive.

“Don’t.””

My voice sounded different.

Even to me.

Calmer.

Colder.

“You don’t get to explain this away anymore.””

Mark swallowed.

“I can explain everything.””

I laughed quietly.

“You’ve been saying that for years.””

His face tightened.

“I know how this looks.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You know exactly how this looks because you built it.””

The room went silent.

Rain tapped against the windows.

For a moment, Mark looked like the man I married.

The tired husband.

The loving father.

The person I wanted to believe was still there.

Then I remembered Lily’s face.

The fear in her eyes.

And I knew I couldn’t confuse familiarity with safety anymore.

“What’s on this drive?”” I asked.

Mark looked away.

“That’s not the full story.””

“Answer me.””

He took a breath.

“It’s a recording.””

“From the night Emma died?””

His silence confirmed it.

Ava stepped forward.

“You knew it existed.””

“Yes.””

“And you let everyone believe Daniel was lying.””

Mark’s jaw tightened.

“I was trying to protect people.””

“Again,” I said.

The word cut through the room.

“Always protecting someone.””

Mark looked at me.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then make me understand.””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Did Emma see something?””

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“What did she see, Mark?””

He looked at the floor.

“She saw Megan arguing with someone.””

“Who?””

He closed his eyes.

“Me.””

My stomach dropped.

Ava whispered:

“You were there.””

Mark nodded.

“I was there.””

The confession hung in the air.

I felt dizzy.

“You lied.””

“Yes.””

“You told me Daniel abandoned his family.””

“Yes.””

“You told me Megan was innocent.””

“I thought I could fix it.””

I stared at him.

“You thought you could fix a dead child?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“A mistake is forgetting a birthday.””

My voice cracked.

“A mistake is saying the wrong thing in an argument.””

I pointed toward him.

“You made choices.””

Mark looked away.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

He hesitated.

Then:

“Of losing everything.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“So you sacrificed everyone else.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“You sacrificed Daniel. You sacrificed Emma. You sacrificed Lily.””

Mark’s face broke.

When he spoke again, his voice was barely audible.

“I never wanted Lily hurt.””

“But she was.””

“I know.””

“Because you taught everyone around her that she could be hurt and nothing would happen.””

He had no answer.

Ava reached for the flash drive.

“We’re listening to it.””

Mark immediately reacted.

“No.””

That single word changed everything.

Not please.

Not wait.

No.

A command.

“You’re afraid of what’s on it.””

He looked at me.

“Chloe, please.””

I turned away.

“I’m done being the person who gives you another chance before you earn it.””

We plugged the drive into Ava’s laptop.

The screen flickered.

A video file appeared.

Created three years ago.

The room went silent.

Mark stood frozen.

The video began.

A dark hallway.

A child’s voice.

Emma.

“Uncle Mark?””

My blood ran cold.

Mark closed his eyes.

The little girl appeared on screen.

Holding a stuffed animal.

“I don’t like when Aunt Megan gets angry.””

Then Mark’s voice.

“Emma, you need to stop talking about things you don’t understand.””

I covered my mouth.

Ava looked horrified.

The video continued.

Emma whispered:

“Daddy said I should tell someone if I’m scared.””

Mark answered:

“Your daddy isn’t here.””

A pause.

Then:

“And you don’t want to make things worse.””

The screen froze.

Nobody spoke.

Then Mark suddenly grabbed the laptop.

I pulled back.

“What are you doing?””

He looked desperate.

“You don’t understand.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

I took the laptop from Ava.

“You’re right.””

May you like

My voice shook.

“I finally understand.””
