Chapter 3: The Secret Mark Buried

The name echoed through the dining room.

A name I hadn’t heard in years.

“Daniel.””

My fingers tightened around the edge of the chair.

Daniel was Mark’s younger brother.

He had disappeared from our lives three years earlier after a family argument nobody ever explained.

Mark always said it was complicated.

He always said Daniel was unstable.

He always said we were better off without him.

But now, hearing his name on that recording, I knew there was a story I had never been told.

I turned toward Mark.

“Why was Daniel mentioned?””

Mark looked away.

“Chloe, not now.””

I felt something inside me break.

“Not now?””

I pointed toward Lily.

“My daughter was slapped today.””

Then I pointed toward the phone.

“And I just heard you say she would forget.””

Mark’s face tightened.

“I was angry.””

“You weren’t angry. You were talking privately.””

He ran his hand through his hair.

“You’re twisting this.””

I looked at Megan.

“Is that what happened?””

Megan didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Lily sat quietly on the couch, watching all of us.

I hated that she had to see this.

I hated that her first lesson about family was learning that some people protected appearances instead of children.

Evelyn sat beside her.

“You okay, sweetheart?””

Lily nodded.

But her voice was small.

“Did Daddy really want Aunt Megan more than me?””

The room went completely silent.

Mark’s expression changed.

For the first time that night, he looked ashamed.

“Lily, no.””

She looked at him.

“Then why did you say I would forget?””

Mark stepped closer.

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

I moved between them.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

Not because he respected me.

Because he finally understood that I was serious.

Megan grabbed her coat.

“I’m leaving.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t get to walk away.””

She turned.

“What do you want from me?””

I stared at the woman who had hurt my child.

“I want you to admit what you did.””

Megan laughed bitterly.

“You think I’m the only problem here?””

The words made me pause.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Mark.

And suddenly, Mark looked afraid again.

“Megan.””

But she continued.

“You told her she didn’t deserve to know.””

My stomach dropped.

“Know what?””

Nobody answered.

I stepped closer.

“What did he not tell me?””

Megan looked at Mark.

For a moment, it seemed like they both understood the same thing.

Their secret was collapsing.

Then Megan whispered,

“Tell her.””

Mark shook his head.

“No.””

Evelyn stood.

“After everything tonight, you still want to lie?””

Mark looked at me.

His eyes were full of panic.

“Chloe, listen to me.””

“No.””

I held up my hand.

“I have spent years listening to your explanations.””

I looked at the recording device.

“Now I’m listening to the truth.””

Mark swallowed.

“Daniel didn’t leave because of the fight.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“Then why did he leave?””

Mark looked down.

“He found out something about Megan.””

Megan’s face went pale.

“What are you doing?””

Mark ignored her.

“He found out she had been taking money from our mother’s account.””

I stared.

“What?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I knew this day would come.””

Megan shook her head.

“That was years ago.””

I looked at her.

“You stole from your own family?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then explain it.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Mark continued.

“Daniel wanted to tell everyone.””

“Why didn’t he?””

Mark hesitated.

That hesitation was worse than the answer.

“Because I stopped him.””

The room felt like it tilted.

“You stopped him?””

“I thought I was protecting the family.””

I laughed once, quietly.

“Protecting the family?””

I looked around the room.

“At what point did protecting the family become protecting people who hurt others?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily suddenly spoke.

“Mommy.””

I turned.

She was holding something in her hand.

A small piece of paper.

“Where did you get that?””

She looked nervous.

“It was inside Daddy’s phone case.””

Mark’s face changed.

“Lily, give me that.””

I took it before he could reach her.

The paper was folded twice.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten message.

Only one sentence.

One sentence that made me realize the recording wasn’t the biggest secret Mark had hidden.

It was a warning.

May you like

And it was signed by someone who was supposed to be gone forever.

*Daniel.*
