Chapter 11: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

I watched the video again.

Not because I wanted to.

Because my mind refused to accept what my eyes had seen.

Mark.

My husband.

Talking to a frightened little girl the same way he had trained Lily to stay quiet.

I closed the laptop.

“I need to call the police.””

Ava nodded.

“I know.””

“But?””

She hesitated.

“But you need the full story first.””

I looked at her.

“What else is there?””

Ava opened another folder.

“There’s something Daniel found before he disappeared.””

Inside was a letter.

Not from Daniel.

From Mark.

I recognized his handwriting immediately.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

It wasn’t a confession.

It was a conversation.

A letter never sent.

*Megan, I can’t keep doing this. Chloe is starting to notice.*

I read faster.

*Daniel is asking questions. He won’t stop.*

Then:

*If he goes to the police, everything falls apart.*

I looked up.

“He knew.””

Ava nodded.

“He knew Daniel was trying to report it.””

I kept reading.

The final line was the one that made my chest tighten.

*I chose you because you’re my family. I hope one day Chloe understands why.*

I put the paper down.

“He chose Megan.””

Ava looked at me sadly.

“Yes.””

The worst part wasn’t the betrayal.

It was realizing I had spent years defending someone who had never defended me.

My phone rang.

Mark.

Again.

I declined.

Immediately, another call came.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman spoke.

“Chloe?””

I recognized the voice.

Megan.

My body stiffened.

“What do you want?””

“I need to talk to you.””

“No.””

“Please.””

I almost laughed.

“Now you’re asking me to listen?””

Her voice became emotional.

“I know what you found.””

“Good.””

A pause.

Then:

“You don’t know the whole truth.””

I looked at Ava.

“Everyone says that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then tell me.””

Megan was silent.

When she spoke again, her voice was different.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

“Mark lied to both of us.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He didn’t just protect me.””

The room felt colder.

“He protected himself.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

Megan whispered:

“Emma wasn’t the only child he failed.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

“I can’t explain over the phone.””

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

“Somewhere Mark can’t hear me.””

I looked at Ava.

“Why should I believe you?””

“Because I have proof.””

“What proof?””

Megan’s voice dropped.

“The original recording.””

I froze.

“What?””

“The one Daniel made the night Emma died.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You said it was gone.””

“Mark said it was gone.””

That sentence changed everything.

“Where is it?””

Megan hesitated.

Then:

“I hid it.””

Ava looked at me.

“What did she say?””

I put the call on speaker.

“Megan, tell me where.””

Her voice shook.

“Under the floorboard in my old house.””

I stared.

“Why would you keep it?””

“Because I was scared.””

“Of Daniel?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Of Mark.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Megan said the words I never expected to hear.

“Chloe, Mark didn’t cover up Emma’s death because he loved me.””

The silence was unbearable.

“He covered it up because Emma saw something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she see?””

Megan whispered:

May you like

“She saw what Mark did.””

The call ended.
