Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Door

My hand froze on the lock.

For a second, I couldn’t breathe.

Lily was standing at the end of the hallway in her pajamas, clutching her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Her face was pale.

“Mommy,” she whispered.

“Don’t open it.””

I turned toward her.

“Sweetheart, why?””

She looked at the door.

“Because Daddy told someone to come here.””

The room went silent.

My heart started pounding.

“What?””

Lily’s eyes filled with fear.

“I heard him talking before we left Grandma’s house.””

I walked toward her slowly.

“What did he say?””

She swallowed.

“He said he needed to get the phone before you listened to everything.””

A cold feeling spread through my body.

Mark wasn’t trying to explain.

He was trying to control the damage.

I looked back at the door.

The knocking came again.

Three slow knocks.

Then silence.

I grabbed my phone and stepped away from the entrance.

“Mommy?””

“It’s okay.””

But I didn’t know if I was telling her or myself.

I called the number that had just texted me.

The one Daniel used.

No answer.

I tried again.

Nothing.

The person outside knocked once more.

“Chloe.””

My blood ran cold.

It was Mark’s voice.

“Open the door.””

I stared at the entrance.

The man standing outside was my husband.

The same man who had held my hand when Lily was born.

The same man who promised he would protect us.

But tonight, I wasn’t sure who I was letting into my house.

“Chloe, please.””

His voice sounded tired.

Not angry.

That almost made it worse.

I unlocked the door but kept the chain attached.

Mark stood outside.

His jacket was wet from the rain.

His face looked exhausted.

When he saw Lily behind me, his expression changed.

“Lily.””

She immediately stepped closer to me.

That small movement destroyed something inside him.

I could see it.

He realized she was afraid of him.

“Can we talk?”” he asked.

I didn’t open the door.

“You already had years to talk.””

“Chloe.””

“No.””

My voice was shaking.

“You don’t get to come here and act like you’re the victim.””

His jaw tightened.

“I’m not.””

“Then why are you here?””

He looked down.

“Because I know Daniel contacted you.””

I stared.

“How?””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“Who told you?””

“Chloe, that doesn’t matter.””

“It matters.””

He stepped closer to the door.

“Megan called me.””

I laughed quietly.

“Of course she did.””

“She’s scared.””

“So am I.””

His eyes lifted.

“Of me?””

I looked at Lily.

“Yes.””

That hurt him.

I saw it.

But then I remembered my daughter covering her face after being slapped.

“I need you to understand something,” Mark said.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

I opened the door slightly, still keeping the chain locked.

“You protected the person who hurt our child.””

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Rain dripped from his hair.

“I thought if the family stayed together, things would get better.””

“Things?””

I stared at him.

“Emma died.””

His face changed.

And for the first time, he looked truly broken.

“Don’t.””

“No. You don’t get to shut me down.””

My voice rose.

“You let me believe Daniel abandoned everyone.””

Mark closed his eyes.

“Because I thought he was going to destroy us.””

“Maybe he was trying to save someone.””

He looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“Chloe, you don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

The silence was always his answer.

I stepped back.

“Go.””

“Please listen.””

“No.””

I closed the door.

But before I locked it, he said something that stopped me.

“Daniel wasn’t the only person who disappeared that night.””

I looked back.

“What does that mean?””

Mark’s expression was filled with regret.

“It means someone else saw what happened.””

“Who?””

He swallowed.

“Megan’s daughter.””

I froze.

“Megan has a daughter?””

Mark looked away.

“She had one.””

My fingers tightened around the door.

“What happened to her?””

He whispered:

“She ran away.””

The rain seemed louder.

“Why?””

Mark looked at me.

“Because she knew what happened to Emma.””

Then he walked away.

I stood there, unable to move.

Another child.

Another secret.

May you like

Another person my husband had hidden from me.

And somewhere out there was someone who knew the truth.
