Chapter 2: The Phone in the Hallway

Nobody touched their food after that.

The turkey sat in the center of the table, untouched and cooling.

The candles burned lower.

The people who had spent the last hour pretending to be a happy family now sat like strangers waiting for someone to confess.

I kept one arm around Lily while staring at Mark.

“Tell me she’s wrong.””

Mark opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence told me more than any answer could have.

“Mark.””

He looked at me.

“Chloe, this isn’t what you think.””

I almost laughed.

Because every person who says those words is usually about to prove you’re right.

“What do I think?””

He looked toward Megan.

She immediately shook her head.

“Don’t involve me in this.””

I stared at her.

“You’re already involved.””

Megan stood up.

“This is ridiculous. A child found a phone and everyone is acting like it’s evidence in some murder case.””

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why did Mark tell you to delete it?””

Megan went silent.

That was the first time I saw fear cross her face.

Mark turned toward Evelyn.

“Grandma, you don’t understand.””

She stepped closer.

“No. I understand perfectly.””

I looked between them.

“What happened before dinner?””

Nobody answered.

So I picked up my phone from the table.

“I’m calling the police.””

Mark’s head snapped toward me.

“What?””

I stared at him.

“My daughter was hit.””

“It was a mistake.””

“She was hit.””

“Chloe, please.””

That word.

Please.

Not because he was worried about Lily.

Because he was worried about the situation.

I stood up.

“Where is your phone?””

Mark hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because Lily said she found it.””

“I already have it.””

I frowned.

“You do?””

He reached into his pocket.

But the movement was too fast.

Too nervous.

I noticed.

“You changed something.””

His expression hardened.

“Chloe, stop accusing me.””

“Then show me.””

The room froze.

Mark looked at me.

“Show you what?””

“The recording.””

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Megan suddenly spoke.

“There is no recording.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Her mistake was immediate.

Because she had answered too quickly.

I looked at her.

“How would you know?””

Megan’s face changed.

“I mean… because Mark told me.””

“About what?””

She looked away.

Mark stepped between us.

“Chloe, this is getting out of control.””

“No. What’s getting out of control is that my husband is protecting his sister instead of our daughter.””

Mark lowered his voice.

“Not everything is about choosing sides.””

I stared at him.

“Our daughter got hurt. There shouldn’t be sides.””

Lily quietly spoke from the couch.

“Daddy was angry before dinner.””

Everyone looked at her.

Mark’s expression changed.

“Lily, honey, don’t make things up.””

My heart dropped.

Because my daughter wasn’t a liar.

Never.

“Lily,” I said softly.

“Tell me what you heard.””

She hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy told Aunt Megan that Mommy couldn’t know.””

Mark looked away.

I felt cold.

“What couldn’t I know?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn walked toward the hallway.

“I kept a copy.””

Mark turned sharply.

“You what?””

Evelyn reached into her purse and pulled out a small device.

A recording drive.

“I knew someone would try to erase the truth.””

Megan’s voice became sharp.

“Evelyn, don’t do this.””

The older woman looked at her.

“No. You did this.””

My hands felt numb.

“What is on that recording?””

Evelyn looked at me with sadness.

“Everything they said before you arrived.””

Mark stepped forward.

“Grandma, please.””

But Evelyn shook her head.

“You should have protected your child.””

She pressed the button.

The room filled with static.

Then came Mark’s voice.

My husband’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“I don’t care if Chloe gets upset. Megan’s family comes first.””

My breathing stopped.

Lily covered her ears.

Then Megan’s voice played.

“She’s becoming a problem. Chloe thinks she can control everyone.””

I looked at Mark.

He looked terrified.

The recording continued.

And then I heard the sentence that made my entire marriage feel like a lie.

Megan said, “What about Lily?””

A pause.

Then Mark answered.

“Lily will forget.””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Because my husband had just told his sister that our daughter’s pain was something temporary.

Something convenient.

Something a child would simply erase.

Then the recording continued.

May you like

And a name I didn’t expect came through the speakers.

A name that made Evelyn’s face turn pale.
