Chapter 14: The Voice Emma Left Behind
Mark left the house before I called the police.
Not because he ran.
Because I told him to leave.
For the first time in our marriage, I made a decision without waiting for his approval.
He stood in the driveway for several minutes.
Waiting.
Maybe expecting me to soften.
Maybe expecting me to remember the good years.
But all I could see was Lily hiding behind me.
So I closed the door.
The next morning, Detective Harris arrived.
I had called after Mark left.
I gave him everything.
The recordings.
The documents.
The photographs.
The messages.
But there was one thing I hadn’t done.
I hadn’t watched the entire video.
I couldn’t.
Not alone.
Detective Harris sat across from me.
“You understand this could change everything?””
I nodded.
“I need the truth.””
He looked at the evidence.
“Your husband has been lying for a long time.””
I looked toward Lily’s room.
“He lied to a child.””
The detective was quiet.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“Someone turned themselves in.””
My heart tightened.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
“Megan.””
I didn’t know whether I was surprised.
Or relieved.
Maybe both.
When Megan entered the station, she looked nothing like the confident woman from Thanksgiving.
No makeup.
No attitude.
Just fear.
She sat across from me.
“I know you hate me.””
I stared at her.
“I don’t know what I feel.””
That was the truth.
Anger was simple.
This was more complicated.
Megan looked down.
“I should have protected Emma.””
“Yes.””
The word came out immediately.
She nodded.
“I know.””
“You should have protected Lily too.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
I wanted to hate her.
It would have been easier.
But there was a difference between understanding someone’s pain and excusing what they did.
I would never confuse the two.
“Why now?””
Megan wiped her face.
“Because Mark was going to destroy everything.””
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Detective Harris.
Then back at me.
“Mark knew Daniel had evidence.””
My stomach tightened.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he take it?””
“Because Daniel hid copies.””
I looked at her.
“And the original?””
She swallowed.
“Emma hid it.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Megan’s voice became quiet.
“Before she died, she knew people weren’t telling the truth.””
The room went still.
“She was a child.””
“I know.””
Megan looked devastated.
“She didn’t understand everything. But she knew she was scared.””
My hands curled into fists.
“What did she hide?””
Megan looked at Detective Harris.
Then said:
“A voice recording.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
Megan whispered:
“In the one place Mark never looked.””
“Where?””
She looked at me.
“Lily’s old bedroom.””
I froze.
“What?””
Megan nodded.
“Daniel gave Emma a small recorder. He told her if she was ever scared, she could press the button.””
My breathing became uneven.
“And she recorded something?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
Megan closed her eyes.
“The truth about what Mark did after she fell.””
I felt sick.
“What did he do?””
Megan looked at me.
“He didn’t call for help first.””
The room went silent.
“He called Evelyn.””
I remembered the photograph.
Evelyn standing in the background.
“She was there?””
Megan nodded.
“Yes.””
My entire understanding of the night changed.
Evelyn wasn’t the grandmother who saved the truth.
She was part of the secret.
Detective Harris stood.
“We need to find that recorder.””
I looked at him.
“My house.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
I whispered:
“Mark lived with us.””
A cold realization hit me.
“He had access to Lily’s old room.””
The detective grabbed his phone.
“And if he knew the recording existed?””
I looked toward the window.
“He would have already searched.””
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Lily’s tablet.
A device Mark had connected years ago.
May you like
The message contained only one sentence.
*Mommy, Daddy was in my room last night.*
