Chapter 9: The Sister Who Disappeared

Claire Carter.

The name felt familiar.

Not because I remembered her.

Because I remembered never hearing it.

That was impossible.

A sister.

A person who should have existed in my childhood memories.

A person who should have been in every family photograph.

But she wasn’t.

I looked at Michael.

“Who was Claire?””

He sat down.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked afraid.

“Your sister.””

The words landed softly.

But the damage was enormous.

“I don’t have a sister.””

Michael looked at me.

“You did.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“My parents only had me.””

Michael looked away.

“That’s what they wanted you to believe.””

Lucas moved closer.

“Why would they hide a daughter?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was probably worse than the question.

Michael finally spoke.

“Claire was born before you.””

I frowned.

“How much older?””

“Five years.””

I felt dizzy.

Five years.

A lifetime of memories missing.

“What happened to her?””

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“She disappeared.””

Sarah immediately asked:

“When?””

Michael looked at the photograph.

“Three days after Edward discovered the Whitmores were involved.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Lucas.

His face was pale.

“What does this have to do with me?””

Michael answered:

“Because Claire was the first person who discovered what Vanessa was capable of.””

My chest tightened.

“Vanessa knew Claire?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Michael hesitated.

“Because Claire was the reason Vanessa entered our family.””

That sentence confused me.

“What does that mean?””

Michael took a deep breath.

“Vanessa didn’t marry into the Whitmore family because of Michael.””

I waited.

“She married him because of the Carters.””

The hidden room suddenly felt colder.

Sarah opened another box.

Inside were letters between Claire and my father.

The first letter was dated years before Vanessa married Michael.

I read it.

Dad,

I know you told me not to investigate the Whitmores.

But I found something.

Vanessa isn’t who she says she is.

My hands tightened.

The second letter was worse.

She knows about Lucas.

She knows about the family connection.

She thinks he is the key.

I looked at Lucas.

“How did Claire know about Lucas before he was born?””

Nobody answered.

Then Michael said:

“Because Claire was there when Lucas’s mother gave birth.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

Michael looked broken.

“Claire helped save him.””

The room fell silent.

Sarah quickly searched through the files.

“She’s mentioned here.””

She held up a document.

“Claire Carter was listed as a witness in a hospital report.””

I grabbed it.

The report was partially blacked out.

But one sentence remained.

The infant was transferred under the protection of Daniel Carter.

My name.

Again.

I looked at Michael.

“What happened to Claire?””

He looked at the floor.

“She tried to expose Vanessa.””

“And?””

“She failed.””

“Where is she now?””

Michael didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

“She’s dead?””

“No.””

The word came quickly.

Too quickly.

I looked at him.

“You know where she is.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Before he could respond, the lights in the hidden room suddenly went out.

Everyone froze.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone was inside the house.

Sarah reached for her radio.

Michael whispered:

“She found us.””

“Who?””

He looked toward the darkness.

“Claire.””

My heart stopped.

“Why would Claire be here?””

Michael’s face was full of fear.

“Because she doesn’t know the truth.””

The footsteps came closer.

Then a woman’s voice echoed from the hallway.

“Daniel Carter?””

I stepped forward.

“Yes?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’ve waited twenty-five years to ask you one question.””

The door opened.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

Michael whispered:

“Claire.””

She looked directly at me.

May you like

And the first thing she said was:

“Why did your father tell you I was dead?””
