Chapter 6: The Secret Birth Record
I couldn’t move.
The photograph felt heavier than it should have.
My father stood beside a hospital bed.
A newborn Lucas rested in his arms.
The date was clear.
The same day Lucas was born.
But there was something else.
A woman was lying in the bed.
Her face was turned away.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who is she?””
Vanessa smiled.
“You really don’t know.””
Michael looked horrified.
“Vanessa, stop.””
She ignored him.
“Your entire life has been built on a lie, Daniel.””
I looked at the picture again.
“My father was at the hospital.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he was protecting Lucas.””
The answer confused me.
“You said he wasn’t supposed to raise him.””
“He wasn’t.””
She stepped closer.
“But he was supposed to make sure nobody found out where Lucas came from.””
My heart pounded.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“Lucas was never just a Carter.””
The words hung in the air.
I looked at Michael.
He couldn’t meet my eyes.
“Tell him,” Vanessa said.
Michael whispered:
“Your father was Lucas’s grandfather.””
“I know that.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“You don’t understand.””
A terrible silence followed.
Then he said:
“Edward wasn’t protecting Lucas because he was family.””
I felt the world tilt.
“He was protecting him because he knew the truth about Lucas’s mother.””
“Who was she?””
Michael’s voice cracked.
“Evelyn.””
I stared.
My grandmother.
That made no sense.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Your father discovered something years ago.””
She pointed at the photograph.
“Lucas was connected to the Carter bloodline in a way nobody expected.””
I shook my head.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
She reached into her bag again.
This time she pulled out a birth certificate.
Official.
Sealed.
My hands trembled as I read it.
The mother’s name.
The father’s name.
Then I saw the problem.
Lucas’s birth records had been altered.
Someone had changed his family history.
Someone powerful.
“Who changed this?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Your father.””
I felt anger explode.
“My father would never do that.””
“He did.””
“Why?””
Her eyes softened.
Not with kindness.
With satisfaction.
“Because he knew if the truth came out, Lucas would become the target.””
A siren sounded outside.
Vanessa looked toward the door.
The police had arrived.
Her confidence disappeared for the first time.
Sarah entered with officers behind her.
“Vanessa Whitmore, step away.””
Vanessa raised her hands slowly.
But before they took her away, she looked at me.
“You still don’t understand.””
I stared at her.
“Understand what?””
She smiled faintly.
“Your father changed Lucas’s records to protect him.””
She paused.
“But he never told you the reason.””
The officers moved her toward the door.
I turned to Sarah.
“What reason?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She held a new file.
“We found another document.””
My stomach dropped.
“What kind?””
Sarah opened it.
A DNA report.
The date was twenty years old.
The names were partially hidden.
But one line was clear.
The test had been performed before Lucas was born.
Sarah looked at me.
“Your father wasn’t investigating Lucas’s identity.””
She swallowed.
“He was investigating who was trying to claim him.””
I looked back at the hospital photograph.
At my father holding Lucas.
At the secret he carried to his grave.
And then I noticed something I hadn’t seen before.
Written on the back of the photograph were five words.
May you like
Five words that changed everything.
