Chapter 12: The Forgery That Exposed Them
The room went silent.
Sarah immediately took the document.
“You’re certain?””
Claire nodded.
“I grew up watching my father write every day.””
She traced the signature carefully.
“This is close.””
“Close?”” I asked.
“Someone copied him.””
Thomas looked shocked.
“Vanessa?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
She looked at Michael.
Nobody needed to ask.
Michael’s face changed.
“I didn’t write it.””
Claire stared at him.
“But you know who did.””
Michael looked away.
That was enough.
I felt anger building.
“How many times are you going to protect people who hurt us?””
Michael closed his eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You were protecting the family name.””
He didn’t argue.
Sarah placed the document into an evidence bag.
“If this is a forgery, someone planned this carefully.””
Claire nodded.
“Vanessa never acted alone.””
Thomas looked at her.
“Who helped her?””
Claire looked at me.
“Someone who knew the Carter family better than anyone.””
My stomach tightened.
“My father?””
“No.””
She paused.
“Someone who worked beside him.””
The answer came slowly.
“The old attorney.””
Sarah looked at the paperwork.
“The one who released Vanessa.””
Claire nodded.
“His name?””
“Richard Bell.””
Sarah immediately searched her files.
“Richard Bell died seven years ago.””
Claire smiled sadly.
“Then you need to check the death certificate.””
Sarah looked up.
“What?””
“Because Richard Bell didn’t die seven years ago.””
The room went still.
Sarah pulled up records.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
I moved closer.
“What did you find?””
She turned the screen toward us.
The death certificate was real.
But the identity information wasn’t.
The man buried under that name wasn’t Richard Bell.
It was someone else.
Someone who disappeared twenty years earlier.
Thomas leaned closer.
“Who?””
Sarah looked at the file.
Then slowly said:
“Edward Carter.””
Nobody spoke.
My father.
Dead.
Alive.
A man who had spent years becoming a mystery inside his own family.
“This is impossible,” I said.
Claire looked at me.
“Your father wanted people to believe he was gone.””
“Why?””
“Because someone was trying to kill him.””
The words changed everything.
I looked at Lucas.
He was listening silently.
Sarah closed the file.
“We need to find out if Edward Carter is alive.””
Michael suddenly stood.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
He looked terrified.
“You can’t find him.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Michael’s voice dropped.
“Because if he knows we found the file…”
He stopped.
“What?””
Michael looked toward the window.
“He will come back.””
The sentence sounded like a warning.
Not a prediction.
A warning.
That night, I returned home with Lucas.
Neither of us spoke much.
Too much truth had been uncovered.
Too many lies had been exposed.
Then, at 2:13 in the morning, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Static.
Then a voice.
An old voice.
A voice I had not heard in twelve years.
My heart stopped.
“Daniel.””
I sat up.
“Dad?””
Silence.
Then:
“I’m sorry.””
My hands began shaking.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
Then my father whispered:
“Far away from the people who want Lucas.””
I looked toward my son’s room.
“Why did you leave?””
His answer came quietly.
“Because Vanessa wasn’t trying to take Lucas from you.””
I waited.
“She was trying to take Lucas from me.””
The line crackled.
“Daniel, listen carefully.””
His voice became urgent.
“The file you found is only the beginning.””
“Beginning of what?””
A long silence.
Then my father said:
May you like
“The truth about who Lucas’s mother really was.””
The call ended.
