Chapter 17: The Child They Wanted

The date haunted me.

Lucas’s birthday.

The same day everything changed.

The same day someone began building a plan around my son.

Sarah spread the recovered documents across the table.

“We need to understand what Richard Bell was trying to accomplish.””

Edward stared at the papers.

“He wanted control.””

“Control of what?””

Edward pointed to the photograph.

“The Carter inheritance.””

I shook my head.

“Again with the inheritance.””

Edward looked at me.

“Because you still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He took a document from the pile.

“The inheritance wasn’t money.””

I read the page.

It was a legal agreement.

A protection clause.

A condition.

“If the Carter family loses ownership through fraud or manipulation, the rightful heir has the authority to reclaim everything.””

Sarah nodded.

“And that heir is Lucas.””

Edward looked at her.

“Yes.””

I looked at Lucas.

He looked overwhelmed.

“I’m just a person.””

Edward’s expression softened.

“I know.””

“Then why does everyone treat me like I’m something else?””

Nobody answered.

Because he was right.

Everyone had turned him into a symbol.

A key.

A solution.

But nobody had stopped to ask what he wanted.

I walked beside him.

“You’re my son first.””

Lucas looked at me.

“Am I?””

The question hurt.

But this time, I didn’t look away.

“Yes.””

No document.

No secret.

No family history could change that.

Lucas nodded slowly.

Then Claire entered.

She had been searching the old records with police.

“I found something.””

Everyone turned.

She placed a file down.

“This explains Richard Bell.””

Edward opened it.

Inside were adoption papers.

Not fake ones.

Real ones.

Thomas Bell.

Born Thomas Carter.

Adopted by Richard Bell.

My father stared.

“Thomas was my brother’s son.””

Claire nodded.

“Richard took him after the family conflict.””

Sarah looked confused.

“Why?””

Claire answered:

“Because Richard believed the Carter inheritance should belong to him.””

Edward closed his eyes.

“He manipulated Thomas.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the documents.

“Then Thomas wasn’t working with Vanessa.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why did he help her?””

“Because he believed Vanessa could help him reclaim what he lost.””

A sound came from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

Thomas stood there.

His face was broken.

“You knew.””

Claire looked at him.

“Yes.””

Thomas looked at Edward.

“You knew too.””

Edward nodded.

“I was trying to find you.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“Twenty years too late.””

I stepped toward him.

“Did you know what Vanessa did to Lucas?””

His face changed.

“No.””

“Did you know about the leash?””

He looked sick.

“No.””

For the first time, I believed him.

Thomas looked at Lucas.

“I’m sorry.””

Lucas said nothing.

Thomas continued:

“She told me you were dangerous.””

Lucas looked away.

“She said you destroyed families.””

Thomas swallowed.

“I believed her.””

The silence was heavy.

Then Vanessa’s voice came through the speaker phone.

Everyone turned.

Sarah had activated a recording.

Vanessa’s interrogation footage.

“You lied to Thomas,” Sarah said.

Vanessa smiled on the screen.

“I told him what he needed to hear.””

Sarah leaned forward.

“You used him.””

“I used everyone.””

The room froze.

Even Vanessa’s own words sounded cruel.

Then she continued:

“Because everyone in this family wanted something.””

The recording paused.

Sarah looked at us.

“She admitted everything.””

Edward shook his head.

“No.””

“What?””

He pointed at the screen.

“Look at her.””

We watched.

Vanessa wasn’t confessing.

She was performing.

She knew she was being recorded.

She wanted us to hear that.

“Why would she do that?”” I asked.

Edward looked terrified.

“Because she’s buying time.””

“For what?””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice spoke.

Not Vanessa.

Not my father.

A stranger.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“This is the hospital.””

My heart tightened.

“What hospital?””

There was a pause.

“Your sister was admitted ten minutes ago.””

I looked at Claire.

She was standing right there.

The caller continued:

“Claire Carter.””

Everyone turned.

Claire’s phone was still on the table.

Nobody had touched it.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

Claire lying unconscious.

May you like

And below it:

You protected the wrong Carter.
