Chapter 5: The Boy Who Remembered

The investigators brought Lucas into the station the next day.

Not because he was accused of anything.

Because he was finally being treated as someone whose memories mattered.

That alone almost broke my heart.

For years, people had questioned him.

Now they were asking him.

A detective named Sarah Mills placed a recorder on the table.

“Lucas, we just need you to tell us everything you remember.””

Lucas looked at me.

I nodded.

“You can do this.””

He took a deep breath.

“When Vanessa put the strap around me, she wasn’t joking.””

Sarah wrote something down.

“What happened before that?””

Lucas looked at the table.

“She took me into the garden because she said my dad needed to learn a lesson.””

My stomach tightened.

“What lesson?”” Sarah asked.

Lucas looked up.

“That he couldn’t always choose me over the family.””

The words hurt.

Because I understood them.

Vanessa didn’t see Lucas as a child.

She saw him as a weapon.

A way to punish me.

“Did anyone else hear this?”” Sarah asked.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Lucas closed his eyes.

“Uncle Michael.””

The room went quiet.

Michael Whitmore.

My brother.

The man who had always acted like family.

The man who had hugged Lucas at Christmas.

The man who told me Vanessa was “just strict.””

Sarah leaned forward.

“What did Michael do?””

Lucas answered quietly.

“He watched.””

I felt something inside me break.

“He didn’t stop her?””

Lucas shook his head.

“No.””

After the interview, Sarah pulled me aside.

“We need to speak with Michael.””

“He disappeared.””

She looked surprised.

“When?””

“After the search warrant was issued.””

Sarah’s expression changed.

“That means he knew.””

That night, I received an unknown message.

One sentence.

Meet me where the truth started.

Attached was an address.

The old Whitmore factory.

I knew I shouldn’t go alone.

But I did.

The factory had been abandoned for years.

The air smelled like rust and rain.

I walked inside slowly.

“Michael?””

My voice echoed.

Then I heard footsteps.

He appeared from the shadows.

Older.

Tired.

Broken.

“Daniel.””

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

He looked away.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“You had twenty years.””

“I was afraid.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone is always afraid after they destroy someone’s life.””

Michael flinched.

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I stepped closer.

“My son thought nobody believed him.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

He was silent.

Finally, he said:

“Because Vanessa knew something about your father.””

“What?””

“She knew Edward wasn’t Lucas’s enemy.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked at me.

“It means your father knew Lucas was in danger before he was even born.””

The rain hit the broken windows harder.

“Explain.””

Michael swallowed.

“Lucas’s mother wasn’t supposed to survive.””

My blood turned cold.

“What are you saying?””

Before he could answer, headlights appeared outside.

A car stopped near the entrance.

Michael looked terrified.

“She found me.””

“Who?””

The factory doors opened.

Vanessa walked inside.

She wasn’t alone.

Behind her stood the old security guard from the footage.

Robert.

But Robert wasn’t supposed to be helping us.

He was supposed to be the witness.

Vanessa smiled.

“Daniel, you really should stop digging.””

I stepped back.

“What did you do?””

She looked at Michael.

“You were always weak.””

Michael lowered his head.

Then Vanessa turned to me.

“You want the truth?””

She reached into her bag.

“I’ll give you the truth.””

She pulled out a photograph.

Not the garden photograph.

Another one.

A hospital photograph.

A newborn baby.

Lucas.

And beside him…

my father.

I stared.

“My father was there?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Yes.””

May you like

Then she handed me the picture.

“And he knew exactly who Lucas’s real parents were.””
