Chapter 7: The Bloodline Nobody Knew

The words on the back of the photograph haunted me.

The boy is not yours alone.

I read them again and again, hoping the meaning would change.

It didn’t.

Lucas was sitting across from me at the kitchen table when I finally showed him.

He stared at the photograph for a long time.

Then he looked up.

“Does this mean you’re not my father?””

The pain in his voice was worse than any accusation.

I reached across the table.

“Lucas, listen to me.””

He pulled his hand away.

“Everyone has been lying to me.””

His words were quiet.

That made them hurt more.

“Vanessa lied. Uncle Michael lied. Grandpa lied.””

He looked at the photograph.

“And now you’re telling me there’s another secret?””

I swallowed.

“I don’t know what the secret is yet.””

“But you knew something was wrong.””

“No.””

“You knew Grandpa was hiding things.””

I didn’t answer quickly enough.

Lucas noticed.

And that silence said more than words.

He stood up.

“I spent my whole life thinking I was crazy because I remembered things nobody else admitted happened.””

“Lucas—”

“No, Dad.””

He turned toward me.

“I need to know if I’m another thing people kept from the truth.””

That night, I didn’t sleep.

I sat in my father’s old study, surrounded by documents and memories, trying to understand the man I thought I knew.

My father had always been distant.

Protective.

Sometimes cold.

I used to believe he regretted becoming a father.

Now I wondered if he had spent his entire life carrying a secret too heavy to share.

At sunrise, Detective Sarah Mills arrived.

She placed a folder on the desk.

“We traced the DNA report.””

I looked at her.

“And?””

She hesitated.

“The test was ordered by Edward Carter.””

“My father.””

“Yes.””

“Who was tested?””

Sarah opened the file.

“The infant listed as Lucas Carter.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“It does when you see the second name.””

She turned the page.

My eyes stopped.

The other person tested was not Lucas’s mother.

Not Vanessa.

Not Michael.

It was me.

Daniel Carter.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“Why would my father test me and Lucas?””

Sarah looked at the report.

“Because he suspected something.””

“What?””

“That Lucas was related to you.””

I stared.

“He is my son.””

“Yes.””

“No, you don’t understand.””

I stood up.

“I raised him. I was there when he was born.””

Sarah nodded.

“But your father was looking for a different connection.””

She pointed to the report.

“The test confirmed a biological relationship between you and Lucas.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because my brain couldn’t process it.

“Of course there is. He’s my son.””

Sarah shook her head.

“Not just father and son.””

My smile disappeared.

“What does that mean?””

She lowered her voice.

“It means the test showed an additional family connection.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“What connection?””

Before she answered, my phone rang.

Lucas.

I picked up immediately.

“Where are you?””

His voice sounded shaken.

“Dad…”

“What happened?””

“I found something in Grandpa’s house.””

I stood.

“What?””

“A room.””

My heart stopped.

“What room?””

“The one nobody knew existed.””

I grabbed my coat.

“Don’t touch anything. I’m coming.””

When I arrived at the old Carter property, Lucas was standing beside a hidden door behind the basement shelves.

He looked at me.

“I found it because of something Vanessa said.””

“What did she say?””

Lucas held up a small key.

“She said Grandpa hid the truth where only someone with Carter blood could find it.””

The door opened with a slow metallic sound.

Inside was a small room.

No furniture.

No decorations.

Only boxes.

Hundreds of them.

Each labeled with dates.

Sarah arrived minutes later.

She opened the first box.

Inside were medical records.

Hospital reports.

Private letters.

And one envelope with my name.

Daniel.

Again.

I opened it.

My father’s handwriting stared back at me.

My son,

If this room is found, then Vanessa failed to keep control of the situation.

But there is something you must understand.

Lucas was never the danger.

The people who wanted him were.

I turned the page.

The next sentence made my hands shake.

The Whitmores believe Lucas carries a secret from the Carter family.

They are wrong.

The secret does not belong to Lucas.

It belongs to you.

I stopped reading.

Lucas looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because beneath my father’s letter was another document.

A family record.

And at the top was a name I recognized.

My own.

May you like

But the date beside it was impossible.

It was dated three years before I was born.
