Chapter 13: The Mother Hidden From History

I stared at the phone long after the call ended.

My father’s voice was gone.

But his final sentence remained.

The truth about who Lucas’s mother really was.

I looked down the hallway toward Lucas’s bedroom.

For years, I believed I knew everything about my son’s beginning.

The hospital.

The first time I held him.

The night I promised his mother I would protect him.

But now every memory felt incomplete.

Every answer had another question hiding behind it.

The next morning, Lucas found me sitting at the kitchen table.

“You talked to him.””

I looked up.

I didn’t ask how he knew.

Lucas had always noticed things people ignored.

“Yes.””

“Grandpa?””

I nodded.

His expression changed.

“Is he alive?””

I took a breath.

“Yes.””

Lucas sat down slowly.

“Why did everyone let us think he was dead?””

“I don’t know.””

He looked frustrated.

“That’s the same answer everyone gives.””

I couldn’t argue.

Because he was right.

For years, adults had protected secrets while Lucas carried the consequences.

“I’m going to find out,” I said.

Lucas looked at me.

“Not without me.””

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to protect him.

But I remembered what happened the last time everyone decided Lucas couldn’t handle the truth.

I nodded.

“Okay.””

An hour later, Sarah arrived with new information.

“We found something about Lucas’s birth records.””

I looked at her.

“His mother?””

She placed a file on the table.

“Yes.””

I opened it.

The name was there.

But it wasn’t the name I expected.

Amelia Carter.

I frowned.

“That’s not Lucas’s mother.””

Sarah looked at me.

“That’s because someone changed the records.””

My chest tightened.

“Who was the original name?””

She turned the page.

A handwritten note appeared beneath the official record.

The mother listed at birth was Amelia Carter.

The biological mother was Claire Evelyn Carter.

I stopped.

Claire.

I looked toward the woman sitting across the room.

She looked away.

Lucas whispered:

“She’s my mother?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew how to say it.

Claire finally spoke.

“I was sixteen when I found out.””

The room went silent.

“You were sixteen?”” I asked.

She nodded.

“I was young. I was scared. I didn’t understand what was happening.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Pain crossed her face.

“Because I was told you knew.””

I froze.

“What?””

Claire looked at Michael.

“He told me Daniel was aware.””

Michael shook his head.

“I never said that.””

“Yes, you did.””

“No.””

The argument stopped.

Because we all understood.

Someone had been lying to both sides.

Claire looked at Lucas.

“I never abandoned you.””

Lucas’s eyes filled.

“Then why wasn’t I raised with you?””

Claire struggled to answer.

“Because Vanessa found out.””

Sarah leaned forward.

“Found out what?””

Claire looked at Lucas.

“That he existed.””

She continued.

“Vanessa believed Lucas was connected to the Carter inheritance.””

I frowned.

“But why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because Lucas was born carrying proof.””

“What proof?””

Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small pendant.

“I hid this before they took him.””

Lucas stared.

“That was mine?””

Claire nodded.

“Your grandmother gave it to me.””

I opened the pendant.

Inside was a tiny piece of paper.

A symbol.

And three words.

THE FIRST HEIR.

Nobody spoke.

Sarah photographed it.

“This symbol,” she said quietly.

“What?””

“It matches something from the Whitmore investigation.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The Whitmores weren’t trying to control Lucas because of money.””

She pointed at the symbol.

“They believed he could legally destroy their entire empire.””

Before anyone could respond, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From my father.

A location.

And one sentence.

Come alone.

I showed Sarah.

She immediately shook her head.

“Absolutely not.””

But I already knew.

My father had spent years hiding.

If he was finally willing to meet, there was a reason.

Then another message appeared.

This one was different.

Not from my father.

From Vanessa.

You’re looking in the wrong direction, Daniel.
