Chapter 15: The Child They Tried to Claim
I drove faster than I ever had before.
Every red light.
Every turn.
Every second felt like a punishment.
Lucas was gone.
Again.
The thought almost destroyed me.
Not because I believed I would lose him.
Because I knew exactly what it felt like to be powerless while someone else decided what happened to him.
When we arrived at the location from his phone signal, it was the old Whitmore greenhouse.
The same estate.
The same place where Lucas had been humiliated as a child.
I entered with Sarah and two officers behind me.
“Lucas!””
No answer.
Then I heard something.
A voice.
“You came.””
I turned.
Lucas stood near the center of the greenhouse.
Alive.
But not alone.
Vanessa stood beside him.
My entire body tensed.
“Move away from him.””
Vanessa smiled.
“You still think I’m the villain.””
“You kidnapped my son.””
“No.””
She looked at Lucas.
“He came willingly.””
I looked at him.
“Lucas?””
He wouldn’t look at me.
“Dad…”
His voice was uncertain.
“What did she tell you?””
Vanessa answered.
“The truth.””
I stepped forward.
“She doesn’t know the truth.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Neither do you.””
Lucas finally looked at me.
“She said Grandpa wasn’t my grandfather.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
Vanessa continued.
“She said Edward lied about everything.””
I looked at Lucas.
“Do you believe her?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation hurt.
Because after everything, Vanessa still knew how to create doubt.
“Lucas.””
He looked at me.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
I walked closer slowly.
“That’s exactly what she wants.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You always underestimate me.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I underestimated how far you would go.””
She smiled.
“Then you underestimated your own family too.””
She pulled out a document.
A birth record.
“Your son deserves to know.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“Put that down.””
Vanessa ignored her.
“Lucas, look at this.””
He took the paper.
His face changed.
I moved closer.
“What does it say?””
Lucas looked up.
“My father’s name.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Tell him.””
Lucas stared at the document.
Then whispered:
“The name listed as my father…”
A pause.
“It isn’t Daniel Carter.””
The greenhouse became silent.
I felt like the ground disappeared.
Vanessa watched my reaction.
“This is why Edward ran.””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“This is why he hid.””
Lucas looked at me.
His eyes were full of confusion.
“Dad…”
I wanted to speak.
I wanted to tell him everything.
But I didn’t know what was true anymore.
Then a voice came from behind us.
“Because the document is fake.””
Everyone turned.
Edward stood at the entrance.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
My father looked at Lucas.
“I’m sorry you had to hear that.””
Lucas stared.
“Grandpa?””
Edward nodded.
“Yes.””
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You’ve spent twenty years trying to convince everyone that Lucas was a problem.””
His voice became colder.
“But you forgot one thing.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“What?””
Edward looked at Lucas.
“He remembers.””
Lucas frowned.
“Remembers what?””
My father took a step forward.
“The night your mother disappeared.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
For the first time…
she looked afraid.
Edward continued:
“And he remembers who was there.””
Lucas went pale.
A memory was returning.
A memory buried for years.
He whispered:
“She wasn’t alone.””
Everyone looked at him.
Lucas’s voice shook.
“Vanessa didn’t take my mother.””
A pause.
“She gave her to someone.””
Vanessa’s expression collapsed.
May you like
And Lucas said the name nobody expected:
“Dad’s brother.””
