Chapter 18: The Last Witness
The hospital room was guarded around the clock.
Not because Claire was dangerous.
Because someone had tried to make sure she never spoke again.
She survived.
Barely.
The doctors said she was lucky.
I hated that word.
Lucky meant we were supposed to be grateful.
But nothing about this felt lucky.
Sarah stood beside me in the hallway.
“We’re close.””
I looked through the glass at Claire.
“She almost died.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“She spent twenty-five years hiding because people like Vanessa wanted the truth buried.””
Sarah was quiet.
Then she said:
“And now we know why.””
I looked at her.
She held a folder.
“We found the final records.””
My chest tightened.
“About Richard Bell?””
She nodded.
“About everything.””
Inside were documents from the original Carter investigation.
Names.
Dates.
Transactions.
Then one page.
A witness statement.
Signed by Claire.
Before she disappeared.
I read it.
Richard Bell was not acting alone.
I looked up.
“Who else?””
Sarah hesitated.
“Someone inside law enforcement.””
The answer made sense.
The Whitmores had survived because someone always helped them.
“Who?””
Sarah turned the page.
My stomach dropped.
The name belonged to someone I knew.
Someone who had been helping us.
Someone who had been trusted.
“Detective Mills?””
Sarah looked confused.
“What?””
I handed her the paper.
Her face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
The document showed a connection.
Not to Sarah.
To her father.
Her late father.
A man who had worked for the Whitmores decades earlier.
Sarah stepped back.
“I didn’t know.””
“I believe you.””
She looked at me.
“But someone wants us to think I’m involved.””
I nodded.
“Because they’re scared.””
That afternoon, Claire woke up.
The doctors allowed only family inside.
She looked at me weakly.
“Daniel.””
I took her hand.
“Don’t talk.””
“I have to.””
“You almost died.””
She smiled sadly.
“I’ve been almost dead for twenty-five years.””
I didn’t know what to say.
She looked toward Lucas.
“I’m sorry.””
Lucas stood quietly.
“For what?””
“For not finding you sooner.””
His eyes filled.
“You were looking.””
Claire nodded.
“Every day.””
Lucas looked away.
“Why didn’t you come?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because Richard threatened your father.””
I froze.
“What threat?””
Claire looked at me.
“He said if I returned, he would tell the world you were responsible for everything.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It would if he controlled the evidence.””
She squeezed my hand.
“Daniel, your father didn’t abandon you.””
I swallowed.
“Then why?””
“Because he made a deal.””
My heart stopped.
“What deal?””
Claire whispered:
“He agreed to disappear.””
“Why?””
“To keep you alive.””
The room became silent.
Lucas stepped closer.
“Who was trying to kill him?””
Claire looked at him.
“The person who created all of this.””
I leaned forward.
“Richard Bell?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
“Then who?””
Claire’s eyes filled with fear.
“The person Richard answered to.””
The monitor beside her began beeping faster.
Doctors rushed in.
Before they pushed us out, Claire grabbed my wrist.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“Find the original birth file.””
“What?””
“Not Lucas’s.””
She struggled to speak.
“Yours.””
The doctors moved her away.
I stood frozen.
My birth file.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece of my own life.
Later that night, Sarah and I returned to the archive.
We searched through every Carter document.
Finally, we found a sealed envelope.
My name was written on it.
Daniel Carter.
Inside was one page.
A birth record.
And one handwritten note.
The handwriting was my father’s.
Daniel,
I’m sorry.
You have spent your whole life believing you were my son.
But the truth is…
I was never your biological father.
I dropped the paper.
May you like
And beneath the sentence was another name.
The name of the man who was.
