Chapter 7: The Blood Test That Changed Everything
Ricardo had built an empire by trusting one thing above all else.
Evidence.
Not rumors.
Not emotions.
Not fear.
Evidence.
Yet now, the evidence around him was turning his entire world into something he no longer recognized.
He stood in his private office, staring at the photograph of Isabella on his desk.
For years, he had believed he knew the story.
A tragic accident.
A cruel loss.
A widow left behind with a baby boy and a broken heart.
But now every piece of his past looked like a carefully constructed lie.
Dante stood nearby, silent.
Finally, Ricardo spoke.
“Arrange the test.””
Dante looked up.
“Boss.””
“I need to know.””
The words were painful to say.
But Ricardo forced them out.
“I need to know if Leo is mine.””
Dante lowered his eyes.
He had been with Ricardo for fifteen years.
He had seen him fight enemies.
He had seen him lose friends.
But he had never seen him this afraid.
“Are you sure?””
Ricardo looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“But I need the truth.””
Later that night, Leo slept peacefully in his crib while doctors quietly collected the samples.
Ricardo stood outside the room.
He couldn’t look away from his son.
Because no matter what the test said, Leo was still the child he held when Isabella died.
Still the child who made him wake up every morning.
Still the child who reached for him when he was scared.
The door opened.
The doctor stepped out.
“We’ll have the results tomorrow.””
Ricardo nodded.
But before the doctor left, Dante received a message.
His face changed.
“What?””
Dante stared at his phone.
“It’s from the woman who called earlier.””
Ricardo immediately turned.
“Play it.””
Dante pressed the message.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
“Ricardo, if you are hearing this, you have found the letter.””
Ricardo froze.
Isabella.
No.
Not Isabella.
Someone pretending to know her.
The voice continued.
“Your wife wanted to tell you everything. She tried. But she knew you would react the way you always do.””
Ricardo’s jaw tightened.
“She knew I would protect her.””
The recording continued.
“She knew you would destroy anyone who threatened your family. That is why she hid the truth.””
Dante looked at Ricardo.
The message ended with one final sentence.
“She wasn’t hiding Leo from you. She was hiding Leo from the man who raised you.””
Ricardo felt the room tilt.
His father.
The late Carlo Valenti.
The man who created the family business.
The man who taught Ricardo everything.
Impossible.
“My father died ten years ago,” Ricardo whispered.
Dante looked troubled.
“But Isabella was alive two years ago.””
Ricardo understood.
Someone had been hiding something long before Isabella’s death.
The next morning, Ricardo met Clara again.
She was sitting in a small coffee shop, holding a cup she hadn’t touched.
“You know something,” Ricardo said.
Clara looked exhausted.
“I wish I did.””
“You knew Mateo.””
“My father.””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“I never met him.””
Ricardo paused.
“What?””
“My grandmother told me he disappeared before I was born.””
“Did she say why?””
Clara shook her head.
“She only told me one thing.””
“What?””
“That he was connected to powerful people.””
Ricardo sat across from her.
“Powerful people like me?””
Clara looked at him.
“Maybe.””
The honesty surprised him.
Most people lied around Ricardo.
Clara didn’t.
“Why are you helping me?”” he asked.
She smiled sadly.
“I don’t know if I am.””
“What do you mean?””
“You’re looking for the truth because you lost your wife.””
She looked at the window.
“I’m looking for it because my entire life feels like someone ripped pages out of my story.””
For a moment, Ricardo saw himself in her.
Two people searching for answers left behind by Isabella.
Then his phone rang.
The lab.
Ricardo answered immediately.
“Hello?””
The doctor’s voice was serious.
“Mr. Valenti, we have the results.””
Ricardo stood.
“And?””
Silence.
A terrible silence.
“Mr. Valenti…”
His fingers tightened around the phone.
“Tell me.””
The doctor took a breath.
“The DNA match confirms…”
Ricardo closed his eyes.
Then he heard the words that shattered him.
“Leo is not your biological son.””
The phone slipped slightly in his hand.
Clara watched his face.
“What happened?””
Ricardo couldn’t answer.
Because at that exact moment, another message appeared on Dante’s phone.
A photograph.
Of Isabella.
Alive.
Taken two weeks after the night she supposedly died.

And beneath the photo was a single sentence:
*You were never supposed to find her secret.*
