Chapter 14: The Ghost From Carlo’s Empire

Victor Morelli was a name Ricardo had not heard in fifteen years.

Not because people forgot him.

Because people were afraid to remember.

Victor was Carlo Valenti’s closest adviser.

The man who handled problems nobody wanted to talk about.

The man who knew every secret.

Every weakness.

Every betrayal.

When Carlo died, Victor disappeared.

Everyone assumed he was killed.

But Ricardo knew one thing about men like Victor.

They didn’t disappear.

They waited.

Dante looked at Ricardo.

“Boss, we need to leave.””

Ricardo held the journal tightly.

“Why?””

“Because if Victor is alive, this place is already compromised.””

Evelyn nodded.

“He knows you found the truth.””

Ricardo looked at her.

“How?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“You told him.””

Evelyn’s face changed.

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

There was still one person missing.

Anthony.

But Anthony was dead.

Or so they thought.

Back at the mansion, Ricardo opened Carlo’s journal.

The pages were filled with numbers.

Names.

Dates.

Deals.

But one section caught his attention.

A name repeated over and over.

Victor.

Carlo had trusted Victor.

But the entries became darker over time.

*Victor is becoming impatient.*

*Victor wants more control.*

*Victor knows about Isabella.*

Ricardo turned the page faster.

Then he saw the sentence that made his blood run cold.

*If anything happens to me, Victor will destroy everything I built.*

Dante leaned closer.

“Keep going.””

Ricardo read.

*My son Ricardo believes strength comes from fear. He is wrong. The only thing stronger than fear is loyalty.*

Ricardo almost laughed.

His father had never spoken like that.

Then came the final entry.

*Victor knows about Clara. He believes she is the key to Mateo’s accounts.*

Ricardo looked at Clara.

The realization hurt.

Her entire life had been shaped by a war she never knew existed.

A knock interrupted them.

Everyone reached for weapons.

A messenger stood outside.

Holding an envelope.

“For Ricardo Valenti.””

Dante checked it.

Nothing.

No trap.

No device.

Just paper.

Ricardo opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Anthony.

Alive.

Sitting in a chair.

And beneath it:

*Your brother is not dead.*

Ricardo stared.

Impossible.

Dante grabbed the picture.

“No.””

Ricardo looked at him.

“What?””

Dante’s face was pale.

“I saw the ambulance.””

“You saw him injured.””

Dante looked at the photo.

“But I never saw him leave the hospital.””

Silence.

Ricardo understood.

Anthony had planned everything.

The shooting.

The confession.

The disappearance.

It was all a performance.

A question formed in Ricardo’s mind.

Was Anthony a victim?

Or was he still part of the betrayal?

Then another message appeared on the back of the photograph.

*Come alone if you want Isabella back.*

Ricardo immediately stood.

Dante stopped him.

“No.””

Ricardo looked at him.

“I’m going.””

“It’s a trap.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Ricardo looked at Clara.

Then at the photo of Isabella.

“Because if she spent two years protecting me…”

His voice hardened.

“I’m spending one night protecting her.””

The location was an abandoned church outside Brooklyn.

Ricardo entered alone.

The doors closed behind him.

A figure stepped from the shadows.

Anthony.

Alive.

But different.

Tired.

Broken.

Ricardo stared.

“You lied.””

Anthony nodded.

“Yes.””

“You used me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Anthony looked toward the altar.

“Because I needed Victor to believe I was dead.””

Ricardo’s anger softened slightly.

“Why?””

Anthony turned.

“Because Victor killed our father.””

The words shocked Ricardo.

“What?””

Anthony stepped closer.

“Carlo wasn’t killed by enemies.””

A pause.

“He was killed by the man he trusted most.””

Ricardo stared.

“Victor.””

Anthony nodded.

“And Isabella discovered it.””

Ricardo’s heart raced.

“Where is she?””

Anthony looked at him.

“I can take you to her.””

A pause.

“But before we go…”

Anthony pulled out a small envelope.

“Read this.””

Ricardo opened it.

Inside was a DNA report.

His hands froze.

Because it wasn’t about Leo.

It was about Isabella.

And the final line revealed something impossible.

*Subject: Isabella Valenti.*

*Status: Biological identity confirmed.*

Ricardo looked up.

“What is this?””

Anthony whispered:

“Because the woman you think is Isabella…”

May you like

A pause.

“May not be the same woman who survived the accident.””
