Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in Isabella’s Letter
Ricardo had spent his entire life believing fear was the strongest weapon a person could have.
Fear kept enemies away.
Fear made people tell the truth.
Fear made powerful men kneel.
But as he stood in his office holding his dead wife’s letter, Ricardo realized there was one thing more powerful than fear.
Doubt.
And that night, doubt was tearing him apart.
Dante stood across the desk, watching Ricardo’s expression carefully.
“Boss,” he said quietly, “what name was at the bottom?””
Ricardo didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed fixed on the paper.
The handwriting was unmistakably Isabella’s.
The curves of every letter.
The tiny mark she always made when she wrote her name.
It was real.
But the words felt impossible.
“She warned me about my family,” Ricardo finally said.
Dante’s face darkened.
“Who?””
Ricardo folded the letter slowly.
“Anthony.””
The room became silent.
Dante’s eyes widened.
“Your brother?””
Ricardo looked toward the window.
Anthony Valenti.
His younger brother.
The person who had stood beside him since they were children.
The person Ricardo trusted more than anyone after Isabella died.
“No,” Dante whispered.
Ricardo’s jaw tightened.
“I said the same thing.””
Dante stepped closer.
“Anthony loved Isabella.””
Ricardo turned sharply.
“Did he?””
The question hung in the air.
Dante had no answer.
Because everyone knew Anthony had always admired Isabella.
Maybe too much.
Before Ricardo became the most powerful man in Brooklyn, Anthony was the charming one.
The funny one.
The one Isabella could make laugh when Ricardo was buried under responsibility.
But Ricardo had never believed his brother would betray him.
Not like this.
A soft sound came from the baby monitor.
Leo was crying.
Ricardo immediately walked toward the door.
Dante noticed.
“You’re going?””
“He needs me.””
Dante followed.
Inside the nursery, Ricardo picked up his son.
Leo quieted almost instantly.
Ricardo looked down at him.
“You’re the reason she fought so hard, aren’t you?””
For the first time in two years, he wondered if he had misunderstood everything.
Maybe Isabella wasn’t just protecting Leo from the accident.
Maybe she was protecting him from someone.
The next morning, Ricardo went to visit Clara.
She was outside the restaurant before opening, carrying boxes of supplies.
When she saw him, she stopped.
“You’re back.””
Ricardo nodded.
“I need your help.””
Clara almost laughed.
“The most feared man in Brooklyn needs my help?””
“Yes.””
She studied his face.
“You’re serious.””
“I need to know everything your grandmother left behind.””
Clara placed the box down.
“I told you, I don’t know what’s inside.””
“But you know her.””
Clara looked away.
“My grandmother was complicated.””
“How?””
“She spent her whole life taking care of people who were broken.””
Ricardo looked at the necklace.
“Did she ever mention a woman named Isabella?””
Clara hesitated.
That tiny hesitation was enough.
Ricardo noticed.
“You know something.””
“No.””
“Clara.””
She sighed.
“She mentioned her once.””
Ricardo stepped closer.
“What did she say?””
Clara looked uncomfortable.
“She said Isabella Valenti was the kindest person she ever met.””
Ricardo’s expression softened.
That sounded like Isabella.
“She also said…”
Clara stopped.
“What?””
“She said Isabella died because someone close to her wanted her silent.””
Ricardo froze.
The street suddenly felt colder.
“Did she know who?””
Clara shook her head.
“No. She never told me.””
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
Ricardo stared at her.
“My grandmother wasn’t afraid of anything. Except one thing.””
“What?””
Clara looked directly into his eyes.
“Your family.””
Before Ricardo could respond, his phone rang.
Dante.
He answered immediately.
“What happened?””
Dante’s voice was urgent.
“Boss, we found something.””
“What?””
“The hospital security footage.””
Ricardo frowned.
“That was destroyed.””
“That’s what someone wanted us to believe.””
Ricardo’s grip tightened around the phone.
“Send it.””
A few seconds later, Dante sent a video file.
Ricardo opened it.
The footage was grainy.
Black and white.
But clear enough.
A man entering Isabella’s hospital room.
A man wearing a familiar watch.
Ricardo’s breathing stopped.
Because he knew that watch.
Everyone in the family knew that watch.
Dante’s voice came through the phone.
“Boss…”
Ricardo stared at the screen.
The man in the video leaned toward Isabella’s bed.
And then Ricardo heard the audio.
A quiet voice.
A voice he had heard thousands of times.
Anthony.
“I’m sorry, Isabella.””
Ricardo dropped the phone onto the table.
Clara watched his face change.
“What did you see?””
Ricardo didn’t answer.
May you like
Because for the first time in his life, he realized his enemy had never been outside his house.
It had been sitting at his dinner table.
