Chapter 19: The Last Betrayal
Ricardo had trusted Dante with his life.
That was the one fact that made the betrayal impossible to accept.
Dante had been there before the empire.
Before the money.
Before the fear.
Before Ricardo became the man everyone whispered about.
He was the person Ricardo called when he had nowhere else to turn.
The person who protected Isabella.
The person who held Leo after he was born.
The person who stood beside Ricardo when he buried his wife.
And now his name was inside Victor’s files.
Ricardo sat in silence, staring at the documents.
Adrian stood across from him.
“You knew?””
Ricardo looked up.
“Knew what?””
“That something was wrong.””
Adrian’s expression was cold.
“You just didn’t want to believe it.””
Ricardo looked away.
Because Adrian was right.
He had ignored too many signs.
Dante knew too much.
Dante had always been one step ahead.
Dante had been the one who told him the necklace belonged to Isabella.
The one who guided him toward certain truths.
But what if Dante wasn’t helping him find the truth?
What if he was controlling which truths Ricardo discovered?
Isabella entered the room.
She immediately noticed his expression.
“What happened?””
Ricardo handed her the folder.
She read quickly.
Then stopped.
Her face changed.
“No.””
Ricardo looked at her.
“You know something.””
Isabella closed the folder.
“Dante wasn’t working for Victor.””
The answer surprised him.
“Then why is his name here?””
She looked at him sadly.
“Because he was trying to stop him.””
Ricardo froze.
“What?””
Isabella sat down.
“Before the accident, Dante found out Victor was controlling Carlo.””
Ricardo listened carefully.
“He tried to warn me.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because Carlo threatened him.””
Ricardo frowned.
“Threatened Dante?””
Isabella nodded.
“Carlo knew Dante cared about you.””
A pause.
“He said if Dante exposed Victor, you would die.””
Ricardo looked at the documents again.
Then he noticed something.
One page was missing.
The final page.
“Where is the rest?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Someone took it.””
Ricardo stood.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the door opened.
Dante walked inside.
Everyone reached for weapons.
Dante stopped.
His eyes moved across the room.
Ricardo.
Isabella.
Clara.
Adrian.
His family.
The family he had spent years protecting.
“Boss.””
Ricardo’s voice was cold.
“Explain.””
Dante looked at the documents.
“You found it.””
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Ricardo stepped closer.
“You knew Victor was alive.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Isabella survived.””
Dante swallowed.
“Yes.””
Anger flashed across Ricardo’s face.
“Then why?””
Dante looked broken.
“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””
Ricardo laughed bitterly.
“You lied to me.””
“I did.””
“Twice.””
Dante lowered his head.
“I’m sorry.””
Ricardo stared at him.
Sorry wasn’t enough.
Not anymore.
“Where is Victor?””
Dante looked up.
“He’s coming here.””
The room became still.
“What?””
Dante continued.
“He knows Adrian is alive.””
Ricardo tightened his fists.
“How?””
“Because Victor has been watching all of us.””
Dante looked at Isabella.
“He wants the Valenti bloodline gone.””
A sound came from outside.
Cars.
Many cars.
Dante immediately moved toward the window.
“He’s here.””
Ricardo looked at him.
“Why should I trust you?””
Dante paused.
Then he removed his weapon and placed it on the table.
“You shouldn’t.””
A moment passed.
“But you should know one thing.””
He looked at Ricardo.
“I never betrayed you.””
The first gunshot shattered the window.
Everyone moved.
Victor’s men surrounded the building.
Ricardo fought beside Dante.
Not because everything was forgiven.
Because survival came first.
During the attack, Victor entered through the front door.
He wasn’t rushing.
He wasn’t afraid.
He walked like he owned the place.
Because he believed he did.
“You always were your father’s son,” Victor said.
Ricardo pointed his weapon.
“You’re finished.””
Victor smiled.
“No.””
He looked at Isabella.
“I’m the only person who knows the full truth.””
Isabella stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
Victor laughed.
“Am I?””
He looked at Adrian.
“Ask your mother what happened the night you disappeared.””
Adrian turned.
“Mom?””
Isabella’s face went pale.
Victor smiled.
“There are still secrets.””
Ricardo looked at Isabella.
“What is he talking about?””
She didn’t answer.
And that silence hurt more than anything.
Victor took one step back.
“Come find me when you’re ready for the final truth.””
Then the lights went out.
When they returned…
Victor was gone.
But he left behind one final message.
A video.
Ricardo played it.
Victor appeared on screen.
“Ricardo, if you want to know why Isabella left you…”
A pause.
“Ask her what she did the night she chose Adrian over you.””
The video ended.
Everyone looked at Isabella.
May you like
And for the first time since she returned…
Ricardo wondered if there was a part of his wife he had never known.
