Chapter 2: The Necklace From the Grave

Ricardo had faced guns pointed at his head.

He had walked into meetings where everyone wanted him dead.

He had survived betrayals from people he trusted.

But nothing had prepared him for seeing a stranger wearing his dead wife’s necklace.

“Take it off,” Ricardo said.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Clara looked confused.

“What?””

“The necklace.””

She stepped back slightly.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t understand.””

Dante moved between them.

“Ricardo…”

The mob boss looked at him.

“You said that was hers.””

Dante nodded slowly.

“I’m sure.””

Clara’s eyebrows tightened.

“How could you be sure? It’s just a necklace.””

Dante stared at the small silver chain.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“It isn’t.””

Ricardo looked at Clara.

“Where did you get it?””

She touched the necklace protectively.

“My grandmother gave it to me.””

“Your grandmother?””

“Yes.””

“What was her name?””

Clara hesitated.

“Margaret Bennett.””

Dante suddenly went still.

Ricardo noticed.

“You know that name?””

Dante didn’t answer.

“Dante.””

The bodyguard looked away.

“I knew a Margaret Bennett.””

The air became heavier.

Ricardo’s jaw tightened.

“Explain.””

Dante looked at Clara.

“She worked as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital.””

Clara nodded slowly.

“She did.””

Ricardo’s eyes narrowed.

“And?””

Dante swallowed.

“She was the nurse who treated Isabella after the accident.””

The name struck Ricardo like a bullet.

Isabella.

His wife.

Leo’s mother.

The woman whose death had destroyed the only soft part of him.

Ricardo remembered the hospital room. The machines. The cold white walls. The necklace he placed around her neck before they took her away.

The necklace that disappeared after her funeral.

“That’s impossible,” Ricardo whispered.

Clara looked between them.

“My grandmother never told me much. She only said this necklace belonged to someone who was loved very deeply.””

Dante stepped closer.

“Did she ever say a name?””

Clara shook her head.

“No.””

Ricardo studied her face.

There was no fear.

No manipulation.

Just confusion.

But Ricardo had survived because he never trusted coincidences.

“Clara,” he said.

“Why are you working here?””

She frowned.

“Because I need money.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Her expression hardened.

“I’m a waitress because bills don’t disappear just because life is difficult.””

For a second, Ricardo saw something familiar.

The same stubbornness Isabella had.

The same way she refused to bow.

Dante noticed Ricardo’s silence.

“Boss, we need to leave.””

Ricardo didn’t move.

“Not yet.””

Clara carefully placed Leo back into his arms.

The baby immediately reached toward her.

Ricardo noticed.

His son had spent months refusing strangers.

Yet now he was reaching for a woman connected to his past.

“Why does he like you?”” Ricardo asked.

Clara smiled sadly.

“Maybe because babies know when someone is lonely.””

Ricardo looked away.

The words hit deeper than she knew.

After Clara returned to work, Ricardo sat silently at the table.

Dante leaned forward.

“There’s something else.””

Ricardo looked up.

“What?””

Dante lowered his voice.

“When Isabella died, the necklace wasn’t the only thing missing.””

Ricardo’s expression changed.

“What else?””

“The hospital records.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“What records?””

“The ones from the night of the accident.””

Ricardo stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me this?””

“Because I thought they were destroyed.””

Dante looked toward Clara.

“But now…”

Ricardo finished the sentence.

“Now they might not be.””

Later that night, Ricardo returned home with Leo asleep in his arms.

He placed his son in the crib and stood there longer than usual.

On the dresser was a photograph of Isabella.

She was smiling.

Alive.

Happy.

He touched the frame.

“I don’t understand.””

His phone suddenly rang.

Dante.

Ricardo answered immediately.

“What did you find?””

There was silence on the other end.

Then Dante spoke.

“Boss… I checked the hospital archives.””

Ricardo’s grip tightened.

“And?””

Dante’s voice dropped.

“There was a woman listed as visiting Isabella the night she died.””

“Who?””

Another pause.

Then Dante said something that made Ricardo’s blood run cold.

“Clara Bennett’s grandmother wasn’t just Isabella’s nurse.””

Ricardo stood frozen.

“What was she?””

May you like

Dante whispered:

“She was the last person to see your wife alive.””
