Chapter 15: The Woman Behind Isabella’s Face

Ricardo had spent years believing he understood pain.

He was wrong.

Pain was losing someone.

Confusion was realizing you never knew what you lost.

He stared at the DNA report.

The words refused to make sense.

Isabella Valenti.

Biological identity confirmed.

But Anthony’s warning changed everything.

“What are you saying?””

Anthony looked exhausted.

“I’m saying Victor planned everything.””

Ricardo stepped closer.

“Explain.””

“After the accident, Isabella survived.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Anthony shook his head.

“You know she survived.””

A pause.

“You don’t know what happened afterward.””

The church was silent.

Anthony continued.

“Victor needed Isabella gone. But he couldn’t kill her.””

“Why?””

“Because too many people would notice.””

Ricardo’s eyes narrowed.

“So?””

“So he created a different story.””

Anthony looked at the report.

“He made everyone believe Isabella was dead.””

Ricardo’s voice lowered.

“And the woman who called me?””

Anthony looked away.

“That’s not the Isabella you remember.””

The words cut deep.

“No.””

Anthony didn’t argue.

“I saw her.””

Ricardo froze.

“When?””

“After the accident.””

“Where?””

Anthony hesitated.

“In Victor’s private clinic.””

Dante would have recognized the danger.

Ricardo did too.

A private clinic.

Hidden.

Controlled.

A place where someone could erase a person.

“What did he do to her?””

Anthony’s silence was the answer.

Ricardo’s anger exploded.

“What did he do?””

Anthony looked at him.

“He tried to erase Isabella Valenti.””

A cold feeling moved through Ricardo.

“Memory.””

Anthony nodded.

“He wanted her to forget everything.””

The room seemed smaller.

“He wanted her to forget you.””

Anthony continued.

“He wanted her to forget Leo.””

Ricardo closed his eyes.

Two years.

Two years believing Isabella abandoned him.

While she had been fighting to remember.

Anthony reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small device.

“She recorded this before Victor found her.””

Ricardo pressed play.

Static.

Then Isabella’s voice.

“Ricardo.””

His heart stopped.

“If you hear this, I need you to know something.””

A pause.

“I never stopped loving you.””

Ricardo looked down.

The strongest man in Brooklyn was struggling to breathe.

“I tried to come home.””

Isabella’s voice trembled.

“But every time I got close, they moved me.””

A pause.

“Someone I trusted betrayed me.””

Ricardo looked at Anthony.

The recording continued.

“Please don’t hate Mateo.””

Ricardo closed his eyes.

“Please don’t hate Clara.””

Then Isabella whispered:

“And please forgive yourself.””

The recording ended.

Anthony looked away.

“She never blamed you.””

Ricardo was silent.

Then he asked:

“Where is she?””

Anthony looked toward the church doors.

“Close.””

Suddenly, a sound came from outside.

Cars.

Multiple cars.

Anthony’s expression changed.

“He found us.””

Ricardo immediately grabbed his weapon.

“Victor?””

Anthony nodded.

The church doors opened.

Men entered.

Armed.

Behind them walked an older man.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

A smile that held no warmth.

Victor Morelli.

He looked at Ricardo.

“After all these years.””

A pause.

“You look exactly like your father.””

Ricardo stared.

“You killed him.””

Victor smiled.

“I corrected his mistakes.””

Dante’s voice came through Ricardo’s earpiece.

“Boss, we’re coming.””

Ricardo ignored him.

“Where is Isabella?””

Victor laughed softly.

“Still asking about her.””

He walked closer.

“She always knew your weakness.””

Ricardo’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“Your heart.””

Then a woman appeared behind him.

Ricardo stopped breathing.

Isabella.

Alive.

Standing there.

Looking at him.

But her eyes were different.

Empty.

She stared at him like he was a stranger.

Victor leaned closer.

“Say hello to your wife.””

Ricardo whispered:

“Isabella…”

The woman looked confused.

“I’m sorry.””

A pause.

“I don’t know who you are.””

And Ricardo realized the cruelest part of Victor’s plan.

He hadn’t taken Isabella away from him.

May you like

He had brought her back.

Without him.
